Shades State Park has rugged trails that are beautiful to see the landscape. Do recommend wearing hiking boots on the rugged trails and especially after it rains. On our hike we took trail 5 down to where it meets up with trail 4 by Sugar...More

Enjoyable trails for our kids ages 17-7. There are not many services in the park so be prepared to bring in water and food. It was a broiling hot day when we visited and needed all the water we had. Don't overlook this park when...More

I stayed at Shades on Friday night. The campground is nice. Plenty of "shade" which was a good thing because it was 82 degrees at 10:00 pm. The ranger was very friendly at the front gate. Loved the scenic ride in. So why the 2...More

We spent several days at Shades tent camping with our kids (10 & 7) and loved it. The campsites are primitive so campers don't come. It's quiet and so beautiful. There is a trail head from the campsite area that connects to some of the...More

I love Shades and Turkey Run for the awesome nature and rugged hiking experience. The canoeing is pretty good too. This time my daughter and I decided to canoe for the day and set up tent for overnight. It was an excellent day on the...More

Revisited this nature preserve after many years and it was as spectacular as I recalled. There is a brochure that will guide you along the trail and explain the unusual geological and botanical features. The trail registry box was broken, so get one from the...More

I really enjoyed this park. Loved listening to the sound of the running water. We went after a rainfall, so some of the trails were pretty rugged. We had on mudboots, which were perfect for these trails. I recommend wearing them if it has rained...More

The trailhead is located at the east end of Shades State Park. The trail crosses a road and enters the nature reserve. Several rock bluffs makes it photogenic. Not crowded at all when I was there.

I love this state park. It doesn't have swimming pools, restaurants or snack bars. It simply has nature. Lots of beautiful, wood picnic areas, a small lake for fishing, fantastic walking trails (be sure to take the one down to Sugar Creek) but my favorite...More

My first time here was on my 3rd date with my husband so we go back occasionally. It's a very safe place yet pretty secluded so you don't have to worry about a large crowd of people. The devil's backbone is our favorite which is...More

There's no beach. Short hike to the river (probably 1/4 mile ) where people swim.

I think there is a camp ground inside or next to the park, however, I did not get in to look it. You may condider to call the park to ask.
