A beautiful natural monestery or gompa I've ever visited. Made with windy cliffs, it looks like a honeycomb from a distance. It's on the top of the hill . Beside dhankar fort. I prayed there inside the prayer hall. It's serene and peaceful. It was an early morning. I talked to the monk and the family living there. They offered me salty tea. From the top pin river n spiti river confluence looks beautiful

Dhankar_the unforgettable terrain, located at 12776 ft from sea level at Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. A beautiful village with ancient Buddhist gumpha and monastery and a lake. Number of houses are 68 here. We l, group of friends stayed at Dhankar heights, a very well maintained hotel with all amenities and with a marvellous view.

We were in Tabo before we reached Dhankar. We visited Tabo Monastry too. Before Tabo I had never been to any Monastry. I saw then only on television. I was so surprised and stunned to see Dhankar Monastry. I was spellbound. I never imagined people could spend their entire life in such a place. We went up to the terrace of the Monastry. We went upto the fort and also to the lake. The mountains are amazing there, they gave me a feeling of something like extraterrestrial as if I was in moon. Never imagined wind and daily erosion could be so harmful.
We stayed in Dhankar Monastry guest house. The property is amazing. The room we stayed had straight view of the Monastry. The guy who runs the guest house takes extra care of their guests and the property. Appreciate your effort guys.

Dhankar Monastery, once the capital of Spiti, It is strategically built at the highest location in Spiti valley. It is one of the main tourist destination in Spiti region. It offers an jaw dropping panoramic view all around ! The monasteries belong to Gelugpa Order of Tibetan Buddhism. The statue of Vairochana or Meditating Buddha’s idol forms the centre of the monastery. Monastery has ancient murals, thankas, Buddhist scriptures that are worth seeing.
Apart from the Monastery, there is a small lake called Dhankar Lake which can be approached through a steep but short trek from here. Once you reach to the lake, the turquoise blue colored water will let you feel the eternal bliss of that place.
In the harsh winter, this place (rather the whole spiti valley) remains cut from the civilization.

Dhankar was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom during the 17th century and has some features dating back to the 12th century. It was the seat of the early rulers of Spiti, the Nonos, who had the right to cultivate the government lands. This Gompa is situated between Kaja and Tabo. While visiting this place we can understand the old culture of the area and have the insight of Tibetan buddhist culture.

The location of Gompa is truly dramatic. The barren mountains are spectacular and unique. The gompa has historical significance plus its a wonder as it is carved into the rocks. I strongly recommend visitors to stay here overnight & soak in the atmosphere. Plus a short climb to Dhankar lake is must.

Dhankar is a small village some distance from town of kaza. Road to dhankar is accessible by bus or car. Not many people visit this monastery, when I visited I was the solo Indian among few foreigners. Head lama explained me the significance and showed me murals. He told me story behind it. It was amazing to sit and talk to such a nobel soul. He offered us tea and told us problem monastery is facing due to lack of funds. There is an initiative 'save dhankar gompa' but I don't know how much it is working. These ancient sites are what adds to our awesomeness, we should do our bit to save them help them. I would recommend a must visit to this gompa and help in whatever way possible to keep it in the shape for thousand years more.

This spectacular village is 8 kms uphill from Schiclling(midway on Kaza-Tabo road)..beautiful drive uphill overlooking the spiti river..u can also reach here from lhalung(3 hr trek from another beautiful village).. the gompa (monastery) is one amongst the 5 oldest ones(around 1000 yrs old)in india ..the name dhang means cliff and kar means fort..its an endangered historical site ..one should spend a day or two atleast in this village..there is also a dhankar lake an hr uphill walk from the village.here the villagers take their cattles for grazing..and if you just go a bit uphill from the lake u reach a cliff where there are flags hanging and from this point u can have an aerial view of the dhankar gompa..beautiful site that shouldnt be mssed once u r here...
overall a must visit place in spiti with genuinely helpful and kind people
p.s... do try the peas grown around this area(so far the best i ever tasted)

so many amazing ancient places to visit and Dhankar is high up on my list of wonders of the world. A lovely cup of tea with the monk high up in the monastery, views that take your breath away... was simply an amazing experience.

My wife and I visited this monastery in first week of April this year. While coming from Tabo side, you have to go through a 8-km stretch called Sichling which is notorious for shooting stones, so reach this place in the morning before 10 am. We reach Dhankhar early morning and had breakfast at a lovely Homestay called Manirang Cafe, which offered lovely panaromic view of the concave-shaped mountain slope which houses the village below and the Dhankhar monastery on top. This monastery resembles a fortress, which in fact is correct as the king of those times had constructed it as a sort of a fortress to protect against invaders. The view of the valley from the top is excellent although a little vertigo inducing. You can also do an hour trek up-to a lake which shows views hidden from this time - due to shortage of time we couldn't do it, but the Homestay host strongly recommended it.
Personally, we liked this monastery more than the Key monastery.
