We actually came here to fInd Iowa's oldest geocache - which is the only one in the park but we ended up really exploring and enjoying the park. We took the full Backbone trail and really enjoyed the views and the relative quiet. Easy and...More

We camped at the Six Pines campground here over Labor Day weekend. We found a beautiful park to hike, with enough trails to keep us busy for 2.5 days dedicated to hiking. The trails are lovely, although most of the ones near the campgrounds are...More

There are 4 entrances to this park so if you put Backbone state park in the GPS be warned it might not take you to your campground. Arrived on a Sunday evening and had reservations in the campground however several open spots. Problem was that...More

We've taken a trip to the cabins at Backbone State Park for the last 5 years now. During the winter, the minimum stay is only 2 days. So, this makes for a perfect weekend. It's close enough that we can leave after work on Friday....More

What a beautiful and fantastic park. River and lake views, forests, open green spaces, everything is kept up so nicely and natural. Clean and plenty of parking areas.

Always a good time. Great sights and plenty of room. Never had any issues other than take something to sit on in the toilets. Plenty of trails and other things to keep kids busy. Just don't take the wee ones on the backbone trail itself,...More

My wife and I were driving back from Galena, Illinois to Omaha last Sunday, and thought we'd take a small detour and check out the park. It was so worth it! The layout was a little confusing, with multiple entrances, but we lucked out when...More

I've never camped there, just day trips and hiking. You might call the rangers and ask them

Well, there are a variety of facilities including cabins that you can rent that looked very nice. As for bugs? Of course there were bugs, it's frickin' Iowa. But they weren't at all bad. We really liked it and it's well-kept.
