Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a wonderful example...

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a wonderful example of Victorian Italianate architecture, the Granger House Museum is the only restored middle-class family home in Linn County. Occupied by a single family for nearly 100 years, the house contains many of its original furnishings and is arranged to reflect the lifestyle of a successful, late 19th-century middle-class family. Behind the home is an 1879 brick carriage house, the only one of its kind in the Midwest, which contains a variety of artifacts revealing the owner’s involvement with Morgan horses, dairying, and farming. The museum is open seasonally, but tours for individuals or groups may be scheduled by appointment throughout the year.

On a whim, I decided to take a quick tour of the Granger House, in our home town. It really is amazing! Take a trip back in time to Marion, Iowa, of the 1800's. President and tour guide Ann did an excellent job describing this middle class home beyond the Victorian architecture, to how the family managed back then. A... More

Great restoration to this historic house. Plenty of activities and events throughout the year. They have an annual ice cream social and different family centered happenings. Check it out when they're open.

Thanks for the lovely review! Unfortunately, we no longer do the ice cream social, but instead offer a wide variety if different programs, concerts, and special events. We're definitely not a typical historic house museum - we offer SO much more! Hope to see you soon at one of our terrific programs! More

I greatly enjoyed my visit to the Granger House Museum. I learned about the family that lived there, and saw how well the history of the house is presented with the artifacts, and decoration of the house. The director Kathy Wilson is a great and knowledgeable person. Go and visit the Granger House, you will not be disappointed. We visited... More

This home is well preserved and furnished. Our tour guide not only told us about the home, but also taught us a great deal about the era in which it was built.

I've enjoyed going through the Granger Historical House many times and each time I learn more about the middle class life set in the 1840+. This time I took my 9 year old grandson and he loved it. Many things are hands on so he could experience life back then. He took pictures so he could tell his parents and... More

Little Marion, Iowa, sometimes obscured by the bigger Cedar Rapids, does have some attractions, and Grainger House is one of them. Although it may not sit on large acres of land, this historic house is a very nice place to visit, and the volunteers are very knowledgeable and accommodating. Well worth a visit.

Built as a single room home in 1848 it was added on and then the Granger family rented it in 1873 and bought it in 1878. A lot of the furniture are from the house. The youngest son lived there until his death in 1969. Opened in summer 11/4, although the director was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and suggested to... More

Old home preserved with furniture even the piano (which has a story of its own) and wonderful staff. Check times as not open all the time unless by appointment. They serve wonderful luncheons by appointment, mystery theater dinners, etc. The Marion history abounds even into the carriage house behind.

If you're ever in the Marion area, you HAVE to go to the Granger House Museum. It's so cool to see the rooms preserved exactly as they were when the family lived there.

The annual ice cream social brings back memories of simpler times and the home is furnished with period pieces that make each room a special adventure. I have had the privilege of acting for several Granger House events where all volunteers put forth great effort to bring eerie tales to the hearts of visitors. While many locals attest to experiencing... More

Sounds like someone enjoyed Halloween at the Granger House when the flood displaced the folks at Usher's Ferry! That fall, they brought their talented volunteers to the museum so they could continue to offer kids a safe alternative to being out on the street. Fortunately, visitors these days don't have to worry about Dr Hack-it-Off or his ghostly cohorts; the... More
