Wish we could have stayed longer and gone to the shop for wine. Am recommending it to others for a visit, want to return, and maybe stay, if possible.Visited May 2023Written May 6, 2023
- kimwillruleSingapore, Singapore2,642 contributionsGood all roundQuinta da Avessada, Douro Valley Porto: First pit-stop of our Living Tours Douro grand wine tourismo and it was a good opening. Walk to the breath-taking view of the terraced vineyards at the Enoteca. The garden has little quaint touches such as a bed of perky sunflowers. There’s a romantic canopy with dripping vines and seats that you can view your postcard beauty vineyards from. Dogs doze off in the sun – such is the pace of life here. The intrigue here is the wine glass shaped pool which if you’re daring enough, you can opt for a dip as you dip into the panamora of the vineyards. It’s a visual feast here. The wine tour was good – a little tacky with the mannequins section where traditional wine-making is explained but it’s all in good fun. Walk into the interiors and the cellar is steeped in dark romanticism and you smell the deep wooden casks and the wine aromas. This is where Moscatels of 1 grape are made and also where we had the most generous flows of wine, port , moscatels and alunch of Portuguese fare such as rissoles, grilled salmon and dessert. Well rounded off with grappa and more wine. It was so staggering with the amount we drank that by 1.30 PM, everyone was merry. #eatstylishtravelstylishVisited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten June 11, 2023

We were "stuck" at this facility when our ship on the Duoro was temporarily disabled for several hours, and we could not return. After wine in the garden, and an amazing lunch, we learned we would be there unexpectedly for several more hours. The owner and staff were absolutely amazing and welcoming, not only sharing more wine, but they also ended up feeding us dinner.
The gardens and vineyards at this venue are gorgeous. It was an extra treat to tour the winery, and hear about the family history.
This is truly a very treasured Portugal memory.

We have recently been to this winery as part of a day tour around the Douro Valley. This 'stop' made the day. The staff were polite, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humour. Mahmood was particularly brilliant in terms of knowledge and how he explained things - he is a gift!!
The food and the whole experience was wonderful. Thank you to all involved!

While on a Viking cruise of the Douro we visited this Quinta for lunch and to tour. When we arrived, we entered to the patio where we were served a small wine refresher.
We then were directed into the dining room where tables were set. It was open seating.
Lunch consisted of several courses including some appetizers, soup, main and dessert. Of course, we had the caldo verde! Both red and white estate wines were served. Coffee was available with dessert.
Near the end of lunch, we had musicians join us. That was a real treat.
The owner, Sr. Luis Boros, came in to tell us about the winery and traditions. He introduced some of the lunch courses.
Following lunch, we had a chance to go to the tasting room for more information about the winery and a look around.
There was an artist there selling paintings.
It was a very nice location. Take the opportunity to look around and see some of the displays outside the dining room or around the grounds.
Restrooms are available.

On November 10, 2019 we took the Portugal, Spain & Douro River Valley river cruise with Uniworld. On November 12 we went to the tour to QUINTA DA AVESSADA for dinner at the Wine Estate. After dinner in their store we bought a bottle of their wine. NEVER, NEVER allow any tourist of the cruise to buy any wine at Quinta Da Avessada. Mr. Barros is a thieve when he overcharged me $33.06 for a bottle of vine instead $10.95 at any store. The cruise manager Mr. Ricardo called him and Mr. Ricardo return my money and I gave him back the bottle of wine. Very disappointed!

This lunch was booked for a 105-person Viking River cruise group and did not disappoint. The quinta (vineyard estate) is located on a hilltop overlooking acres and acres of Douro River vines. It was late November, so the colors of the leaves were beautiful. The lunch was held in a beautiful old room with large tables set for 10 or more. We began with a special soup, notable for a historic event. A woman who owned a large number of vineyards at the time of the phyloxera grape disease about 100 years ago, was able to save many small farmers by tiding them over with a nutritious soup she managed to deliver to them. Otherwise, they and their families would have gone hungry and sold their properties at depressed prices. The lady is honored in the region, and this hearty soup, based on her recipe, was our first course. I could see how it was able to sustain those hard-working families! It was also truly tasty. Local wines were served with our meal which was then topped off with several dessert choices. I opted for "Drunken Pears" which were marinated in red wine and sugar. I'm glad I had this local specialty and felt it was a fitting end to a memorable meal. All in all, Viking made a great choice in having us visit this historic quinta. I would love to return some day.

We were part of a small (25-people) tour group and were pre-booked for the tour and lunch. We were greeted with a smile and a glass of Muscatel wine; the main grape of the area, which we had out on the terrace overlooking the vineyards and surrounding hills. The Quinta is located at one of the highest points of the Douro Valley at just over 600-meters. After our delicious glass of wine we had a short lecture about the Quinta and its wine production. Then it was in for an excellent lunch of salad, soup, main course and dessert; red and white wine was available on the tables and when a bottle was empty it was replaced straight away with a full one! Water was also available and after the meal port and grappa was offered - it was all very nice indeed and took a couple of hours! We were then put to work in the vineyard; following a briefing on how to cut the grapes without accidents, we were each given a bucket and a pair of secateurs and told to fill the bucket. Then it was back to the Quinta where those who wished/volunteered took off their shoes and socks and then proceeded to stomp the grapes in a large stone trough, accompanied by a local accordion player who kept the pace - all great fun. To finish our tour we were given a short talk by the 6th generation owner, who was rightly very proud of his Qunita and its staff. A really good day.

If visiting as part of a Douro River cruise and having lunch at the Quinta, is the wine (which I can see is said to flow freely) included? I believe that my lunch will be paid for by the cruise line, but I just wanted to know about the drinks. Thanks.
