Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a private, non-profit educational and recreational nature preserve located 20 minutes from the Louisville airport in Kentucky. Bernheim, founded in 1929 by philanthropist Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, opened to the public in 1950. More than 200,000 annual visitors connect with nature by enjoying over 32 miles of hiking trails, a Canopy Tree Walk, a Children’s Play Garden, year-round educational programs and events. Bernheim, steward to 14,500 acres of natural lands, includes a nationally-recognized, 600-acre arboretum designed by the landscape architecture firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. The arboretum contains over 8,000 plant species including the renowned Hubbuch Holly Collection. Bernheim has won numerous awards on sustainability initiatives including LEED® Platinum for the Visitor Center, which was the first Platinum award in Kentucky and surrounding five-state region. Isaac Cafe is open from 11-4 daily and serves soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts.

Simply a gorgeous place to visit without any sort of agenda. Go, wander the woods, the pond, the memorial. Take in the gardens as well as the many pieces of unusual artwork tucked in and about the grounds. Trails are of varying lengths from handicap accessible to serious treckkers. Wildlife, flowers abound. After your walk about there's Isaac's Cafe with... More

This was my and my boyfriend's favorite stop of our trip to KY. Beautiful and easy to get around. The cafe sold delicious food with local ingredients. This was the highlight of our trip.

We never pass up an arboretum, and we enjoyed our visit to Bernheim. We found this place on a busy Saturday and we were happy to see so many families and kids exploring the woods. There were naturalists assisting in the Visitor's Center. There is a very nice cafe and gift shop in the Visitor Center. We took a nice... More

What a fabulous way to spend a sunny day! This is our first time in the Louisville area and decided to spend the day at Bernheim. It was sunny and 70 degrees and no wind. There is a $5 per vehicle charge on the weekends and it was the best $5 I've spent since we've been in Louisville. We enjoyed... More

the reason I am rating this so low is because we arrived to find they charge to enter a state park and we found that to be absurd

Just down the road from Jim Beams facility, and just off I 65. A drive through arboretum with plenty of pull offs if you prefer, as well as numerous walking trails. Beautiful plant life and tree foliage 3 seasons of the year. Great picnic site, quiet spot for sitting, reading, bird watching, wildlife spotting etc. If you are traveling any... More

I've been visiting here for a long time and really enjoy the trails. It's right off the interstate, but still peaceful enough to feel as though you've left town. Great for hikes, picnics, and quiet.

We went on a short one and a half mile hike with our four year old and he loved it! The trail was fantastic and the canopy tour was wonderful. We went up to fire tower and a very nice gentleman gave us a history of the park. They have a great playground for children. Plenty of beautiful things to... More

4 1/2 hours into the first day of our trip, we stopped at Bernheim to enjoy a walk around the park and woods. We ate a good lunch at Issac's Cafe and throughly enjoyed this stop.

On a beautiful fall day we drove to Bernheim Forrest for a enjoyable nature hike with a docent who was not only knowledgeable but truly enthusiastic. It's been many years since we had been here but will make more visits in the future. The visitor's center was very attractive with friendly staff to boot. The cost is $5 per carload... More
