About
Although Maine’s oldest lighthouse is closed to the public, there’s plenty to do within the grounds of Fort Williams Park. Stop by the adjacent museum to learn about the lighthouse’s history and enjoy the lawns—perfect for a picnic as you watch boats entering and leaving the harbor. You can also hike one of the trails along the rocky shore or explore several ruins within the former Fort Williams, which include two batteries, a powerhouse, and a bunker. More adventurous travelers can snorkel or scuba dive at the stunning Ship Cove. – Tripadvisor

    Almost spring.
This place is nice to visit even in February. The water is a teal blue, and the sky is a brilliant blue (due to the cold -- no haze). The lighthouse was still standing, even after the nor'easter we had a few months ago.

Good stop at the State's oldest Lighthouse.
On our 48 State trip we only have about 1-2 days per State. The Portland Head Light is a great Historical stop. Portland Head Light was built in 1791. Commissioned by George Washington and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette, it is the state's oldest lighthouse.

    Must see!
You can’t go in the lighthouse but there is still lots to do! We walked all around - great views! We walked on the rocks and collected some. It was a rainy day when we went, otherwise, would be a nice place to have a picnic! Besides, this is the oldest lighthouse in Maine!

    Iconic
A visit to Portland Head Light is a must when visiting Portland. The location is stunning and you can spend several hours exploring the lighthouse and surrounding green spaces. Truly one of the prettiest places around.

    Spectacular visit with scenic views
Vast park with beautiful, scenic views and plenty of room for families and visitors to spread out. Very clean, and parking was decent (we went on a Friday morning before a holiday weekend, so I don't know how it is at other times). Port-a-potties on site that seemed maintained. There were various food trucks there and a few artisans selling their crafts. Picnic table spread about and even a few grills on premises. I highly recommend visiting and would definitely go again.

A Fascinating Journey Back in Time
A Light House built in 1791 with a very rich and fascinating history. Still maintained in immaculate condition with a small museum house in the building next to it. The first lens that was used is over 7 feet tall and is on display along with the later, more advance ones that would enhance the illumination from the light source multiple times. Fascinating is the word that comes to mind. A must see on a visit to Maine.

    Historic AND gorgeous.
There have been thousands of photos taken of iconic Portland Head Light because it's the oldest lighthouse in Maine and a magnificent one. It was built in 1791, around the time when Fletcher Christian was on Pitcairn Island with the other Bounty mutineers and a few Tahitians. On the beautiful mid-June day that we went, there were lots of tourists taking advantage of the views, food trucks, trails, and park.

Scenic place to spend a few hours.
We drove here to have a walk around the coastal paths and visit this lighthouse. Great place for families to beach comb and lots of grassy areas to play ball games. Lots of car parks .

Add this to your sightseeing list!
A beautiful sunset stop! Perfect for a picnic, taking pictures, and watching the water up on the cliffs or from the beach below. The park property caters to all types of travelers by offering a close-up view of the house, open fields, cliffs with trails down to the water, sport courts, food trucks and more. It’s dog friendly too! The lighthouse encapsulates east coast culture and is a must see!

    beautiful lighthouse
Beautiful lighthouse. Amazing views. Can see other lighthouses. Very picturesque. It was closed, so we couldn’t go inside. It was situated at Fort Williams Park. The park has a huge green space which is perfect for picnicking, games, etc. Lots to explore. The only cost, which was minimal, was for parking. However, there is plenty of parking. Definitely worth the stop.

This was the best of three lighthouses we visited in the Portland area. You have to pay for parking but it is plentiful. The grounds around the lighthouse are nice as are the views. They have a small gift shop on site.

Beautiful well maintained park. A must visit any time of year. Exactly what I imagined it to be! The sights and sounds of the fog horn and the smell of the ocean were unforgettable.

Perfect! This was the most perfect stop. We enjoyed our lobster roll from The Lobster Shack while listening the enchanting seaside waves. Don't miss it!

Gorgeous views. There are a lot of parking areas (pay parking) so that was nice we found a spot pretty easily. The whole coast area is beautiful and you can explore a decent stretch. The lighthouse itself is stunning and a beautiful piece of history.

We loved our experience here! Parking was cheap, we walked around right up to the lighthouse and the other views and spots were so pretty and perfect. History and plaques were interesting, and we got dinner at Bite into Maine food truck right across the street. Beautiful place and could have stayed longer just sitting and listening to the ocean, enjoying the view.

Lovely site!

I have always loved lighthouses and this one is spectacular. Easy access and lots of area to take photos. Scenery is so beautiful- crowds were light and many folks were very interested to meet our dog who was traveling with us!

This is a moderately interesting site overrun with tourist buses and with THE worst and least hygienic public restrooms (porta potties) we have experienced in 40 states! My advice - don't bother and definitely don't use the porta potties which are an absolute disgrace.
