Great fun!

Always fun. I often find some wonderful things at great prices, many very unique - even if I don’t find something, browsing is delightful.

There is a lot to see here if you are browsing. Only down fall is that the prices reflect that they are close to a tourist area. If you are coming from a distance I really would go out of your way.

Potentially unhealthy experience
Jun. 2020
Visited the Big Chicken Barn to reload on books.

Parking lot, which should be filled with cars, had four, all instate. Sign on door says “we require masks” but go inside and none of employees had masks on. The 6 or 7 customers did, because they had a sign saying had to wear one.

Walk around carrying a shopping basket for 30 minutes, filled with books. Cash out while watching employee take the basket and drop it onto pile of baskets without wiping handles.

There was a bottle of sanitizer on counter. I asked if I could have one squirt, having just spent $50. The older guy actually laughed at me and said “no”, mockingly. Customer behind me gave me a pre- packaged wipe which I darn well used before I got back in Jeep

The BCB management isn't taking Covifd-16 precautions seriously

Won’t go back there anytime soon, if ever

Not as good as years past

My family and I have been to the Big Chicken Barn for many times over the years and have enjoyed our visits with many purchases.

This year we found the items for sale routine and not unique, while at the same time overpriced.

An adventure among the stacks
Aug. 2019
Big Chicken Barn bookstore in Ellsworth, Maine is a very unique adventure. The first floor is primarily antiques. The offerings here were pretty mainstream, not a lot of unusual things. The second and I think, third floors were books. The first thing that hits you when you climb to the second floor is the musty smell of thousands of old books. This tells you that you are in for an adventure. We were looking for a particular thing and didn’t have time to browse the whole floor. Here and there among the stacks were chairs and sofas so that you could sit and study your potential purchases. Besides books there were maps, posters, photos, and almost anything made of paper. For the subject we were after there were not many options, but we found a couple of gems nonetheless. We found the prices reasonable and felt it a worthwhile stop. I am handicapped and I found it difficult getting to the second floor.

Overpriced
Aug. 2019 • Family
While they had a huge selection of books and antiques, everything was way overpriced! If you are just browsing then it's a great place to do, that lots to see. But buying is a different story unless you find something you can't find anywhere else.

Huge place full of treasure

Okay, so I was expecting a large barn type structure. Oh no, the Big Chicken Barn is an enormous old building. There are 2 or 3? floors, but we only made it through the first. There is something for pretty much everyone here. Prices are a little odd. Do not be put off by some high prices, there are lots of really cool things for the budget conscious. I got a beautiful old piano roll for $4. A great place to spend an afternoon or two.

Great place to shop

My wife and I stop every time we come to Maine. They always have something that "wants to come home with us."

They have a good variety of antiques, with several vendors. The antiques are mostly in booths, with plenty of room to move around. There are a few glass cases at the entrance.

On the second floor is their book section. There are also old magazines for sale, as well as old magazine advertising.

They also have restroom facilities on the first floor, available for their customers.

If you like antiques and/or old books and magazines, I recommend you stop by.

Fun to browse

This was a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting more books and fewer antiques. The antiques are done in a mall style, with various sellers having booths along the entire lower floor. The prices seemed relatively high and we didn't find anything worth buying. We were travelling with 2 dogs, and it's worth noting for similar travellers that while dogs *are* permitted, they have to be *carried*, and you can't really do that with our 2 Labradors. One final thing: the patronizing signs all over the front door were not particularly welcoming, nor were the ''smile, you're on camera'' signs all over the barn.

Huge

This place is huge. I was driving by and stopped in. There are a ton of used books. Like a entire loft and part of the main floor. There are a lot of antiques as well. I was inside for 2 hours and it felt like 30 minutes. Time flies by searching for things. This is a great spot.
