Mackworth Island isn't a place to come to on a whim--mostly because access is limited--to cars. The island is a bird sanctuary operated by the State of Maine. (It also houses the Baxter School for the Deaf, which is not open to the public.) The 1.25 mile trail around the island is a beautiful and easy walk with benches along... More

This is listed under Falmouth, Maine, but it's really just on the edge of Portland. If you're visiting Portland Maine, this is a great place to take a 45 minute easy walk on the water, and see Portland from across Back Bay. It's literally a 5 minute drive from the East End of Portland. The entire walk is along the... More

The might be the best place to go for a walk in Greater Portland. Pocket beaches, forest, old trees.......lovely. Casco Bay accompanies your walk the whole way. Parking can be a problem as it has become so popular. Go early, or ride your bike across the causeway. I love this plac ein winter...so quiet and peaceful, especially after a snowstorm.

There are lots of great places to walk and hike in Maine, but none is lovelier or more pleasant than Mackworth Island. The paths are gentle, but interesting, with spots along the way to stop and rest. The views of Casco Bay are beautiful, and it's fun to go down on the rocky beach to get a better look. Macworth... Macworth island is a great place to explore and have small adventure. There are trails in the woods with some leading up on the beach.

This was a very nice stroll around the island. We went down to a small beach area. One thing that would have been nice to have is a bathroom facility half way around. The swings were fun and the ferry houses very cute.

This is a very pretty one and a quarter mile loop around Mackworth Island. You will enjoy gorgeous views of Casco bay as you meander your way through a woodsy trail. There are benches to sit and enjoy the views or beaches to lay on and reflect in the sun! A worthwhile visit!

My 9 year old granddaughter and I have been working on her Maine Passport book that entails going to various State Parks where you find a locked box. The book gives the code to get into the box where you will find a rubber stamp to use on the "passport." Mackworth Island was listed in her book--what a gem!! She... More

We were very satisfied with the beach area, and the location in Falmouth, very easy to find. We were also able to take our dog, but had to keep him on a leash, on land, and in the water. It was too bad that he had to be on a leash in the water, that is my only complaint, other... More
