One of Casco Bay’s More Intriguing and Remote Lighthouses
This magnificent, 77-foot (23.5 m) tall, granite lighthouse (built 1871, restored 2017) and its ancillary structures stood in Casco Bay on roughly two-acre (0.8 ha) Halfway Rock, almost due south of Land’s End. It was named for being roughly the midpoint on the Bay between Cape Elizabeth (to the south) and Cape Small Point (to the north). We were able to view it, with the aid of zoom lenses, from the beach near Land’s End Gift Shop at the tip of Bailey Island in Harpswell. It was accessible only by watercraft. We admired all that we could see of it; we disliked nothing.
