Monhegan, in my opinion, is far better than Acadia. The scenery is similar, which means spectacular, but there are no crowds or cars. The people going over on the ferry from Port Clyde are just about the only people you are going to see all day, give or take a few. The island is the perfect size for a day... More

Take the mail boat from Port Clyde to Mohegan Island. This is a lovely ride out to the island, which is about 10 miles from the mainland. The island has many trails that take you to the edge of cliffs, through the forested sections of the island, and past several points of interest (the Mohegan Museum). It is a small... More

If you are in the Rockland Maine area, consider taking the mail boat to Monhegan Island for a day of peace and beauty. It's 12 miles off the coast of Maine and when you get to the island, it's like being in another world. There are no cars allowed and the island is covered with hiking trails leading to stunning... We took the 10:30am boat from Port Clyde. After a leisurely boat ride we were there in one hour. We hiked the #1 trail on the north end of the island. Beautiful views of the coast. We cam back to Port on the #18 trail. Hike took about two hours. It was rocky with lots of little ups and downs.... More

I have made it out to many Maine Islands and finally to Monhegan this September. Wow, what a beautiful place. A beautiful and well preserved blend of unspoiled Maine Coastal Village combined with beautiful ocean and cliff views. What a place to take pictures. Every inch of this island is beautiful but we especially liked the views by the lighthouse... More

We took the 10:30 ferry from Port Clyde. Takes about an hour to reach the island. It was a beautiful day and enjoyed the ride. Took a short hike and then a nice lunch at the Island Inn. A more extended hike after lunch and visited some of the small shops. Then took the 4:30 ferry home. Very pleasant day.

I like islands. I've visited and lived on many all over the world. Monhegan is special but maybe overly loved. I did not know exactly what to expect going there to stay for a long weekend visit. Other than I was expecting no motor vehicles. So I was slightly surprised to see all of these big old pick up trucks... More

I blew out my flip flop and was trying to figure out how my heal was going to continue cruising until I arrived home, but the kindness and determination of strangers helped me. Love Monhegan, the water was great.

This charming small island is a working artists' colony as well as a good place for hikes. In one day you can visit all the sights and take a hike or two. Better yet, stay over and view the sunrise and sunset. Three ferry services go to the island, with the shortest taking 45 minutes. Do not miss this wonderful,... More
