If you are interested in History, do not miss this museum and talking to the docents. Being from Portsmouth, NH there are a lot of similarities between Monhegan and the Isles of Shoals. I was very interested in knowing more about Mohegan. We were too...More

I must see if you're on Monhegan. The museum has lots of treasures from the island's past as well as a lovely art exhibit. If you're lucky, the lighthouse will be open and you can climb up and see the entire island.

If you're a history buff, you'll love this museum. Packed with nautical artifacts! When you pay to go in, you'll also be able to visit the nearby gallery.

We were really surprised by this jewel of a small museum. There were two shows, one featured a local artist, the other showed the history of Monhegan Island.

Every year we mount an exhibition in the gallery that focuses on a different artist or period in Monhegan art. This year's show is work by Andrew Winter http://monheganmuseum.org/exhibitions-2/ who lived year-round on the island from 1940 until his death in 1958. We also show...More

Must see if you want to get the true history of the island and the lighthouse. The lighthouse is closed to visitors. What a let down. I enjoy looking inside these old structures, but the museum is great. Well worth the $10 admission fee.

Sorry that you missed climbing the light tower! We try to have it open Thursdays and Sundays throughout the summer (weather permitting). We hope that you are able to see it on your next visit to the island!

If you're on Monhegan for more than 2 days, spend an entire afternoon here. It has a wonderful collection of island lore - fascinating! Next year, I might volunteer there one day.
