We took a harbor cruise tour that had a stop at this fort. Our guide gave us some interesting facts about its history.

We've been wanting to go here for years, but my partner hates boats. Captain Carle was very sympathetic and took us over and back as smoothly as possible. He also showed us around while we were out there. While it's small it's completely awesome. I hope the efforts to conserve and preserve this place are successful.

Nice to see it going around it by boat, but it's a shame you cannot land on the small island to visit it !

This crumbly old Civil War-era fort is only accessible by water. We have our own boat, and visit Fort Gorges at least once every summer - my husband will motor in (if tide is right) to let us all leap out of the boat onto the granite perimeter of the fort, and then he'll wait out in the bay until... Fort gores is only reachable by kayak, canoe or power boat.. Built to protect Portland Harbor in the 1860's, it is worth the effort to get there and see the well preserved fort,

Stopped by the Portland, Maine visitors center first located right next to the cruise ship docks, may even been the cruse terminal. Anyway they have these free local maps that show all the different areas of greater Portland. One thing I stated that I wanted was to take a walk along the water, and was informed all I had to... I have never been to the fort itself, but the view from the shore is beautiful. Bring the camera and views of it, and if you focus in with the right settings you should be able to get both forts in.

This old fort is an easy paddle from the East End Beach and is made of walls with a grassy area in the middle. We go out a few times a summer to spend the day, swim and poke around the old fort. Some people spend the night out there and there are fire remains in a pit on the... More

It is great to look at, both from the shore and cruising by on boat rides. I wish it was easier to get to to take a look inside like to kayakers do.
