As Civil War statues go, this one was far grander than many others we've seen in New England. It's the focal point of Portland's Monument Square. It's also in remarkably good condition given its urban setting. The monument commemorates local sacrifices for the Union cause. It's near cafes, restaurants, a bookstore, and offices as well as the Portland Public Library and the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow house. We felt quite safe viewing it during our weekend visit. We most appreciated the artistic detail throughout the monument; we disliked nothing.

Set on a granite pedestal, this 14-foot (4.3 m) tall magnificent bronze sculpture (cast 1890) commemorated the city’s sacrifices during the Civil War. It also had two smaller cast bronze sculpture clusters, one dedicated to the Army (on its north side), the other dedicated to the Navy (on its south side). Located in Monument Square in the heart of Portland’s Government District, the monument was dedicated in 1891. It was a short walk from the Old Port area. Access was by concrete- and brick-paved sidewalks. Metered curbside parking and paid parking garages were nearby. I most liked all the fine attention to detail in the life-like sculptures that I found here; I disliked nothing.

The Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument is located in the center of Monument Square, on the former site of Portland's 1825 city hall. It was dedicated on 28th October 1891 and honors "those brave men of Portland, soldiers of the United States army and sailors of the navy of the United States, who died in defense of the country in the late civil war". Also known as "Our Lady of Victories", it is a bronze statue mounted on a granite plinth, depicting a female figure, clad in armor covered by flowing robes. In one hand is a furled flag and in the other a mace and shield. The figure is an allegorical representation of Victory. On two sides of the granite base stand bronze groups of three figures, one depicting soldiers, and the other sailors. The sculpture was created by Maine sculptor Franklin Simmons and the base was designed by New York City architect Richard Morris Hunt. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 1st April 1998. It is a Portland Maine landmark worth stopping to look at if in the area but probably not worth making a big detour to see.
