This interesting planateriam is easyto find on Falmouth Street in Portland Maine in the Science building at the Univeristy of Southern Maine. Although it's an educational facility focused on astronomy, there are no telescopes, but the programs are brilliantly presented in a skydome theater, presented by professionals. We enjoyed the program "Two Pieces of Glass" a wonderful history about the... More

Even though all the shows were canceled because of a snowstorm, the staff were very nice and let us wander around. They even did a short mini-show for us! My kids and I enjoyed it a lot. Some of their equipment is considered old-school, but it still functions really well. This trip was definitely worth it.

I have been going to the Southworth Planetarium every so often for decades. Have seen Laser Light Shows, Christmas Star programs, and multiple other interesting presentations. It is on the campus of the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine. It is a homely facility, but they do good work there. I have taken my grandson and he enjoyed it... More

A great afternoon activity. They explain about the current night sky and then show a cute video up on the planetarium sky (ceiling) :-D Interesting and fun family outing with really nice staff!

If you have children and looking for something interesting for them to do on New Year's Eve, this might be a good option for you. When in this theater, unlike a typical movie theater seat, you are angled to where you're almost lying in the lap of the person behind you. During New Years, they had a few different movies... More

Recently we spent a week in Old Orchard Beach with our grandson. While looking for things to do in the area, my wife found the Southworth Planetarium in Portland, Me at the University of Southern Maine. She checked out what was offered there and found one, Dinosaurs at Dusk, that our grandson may enjoy. They had several others but they... More

Good for a rainy day. Kids enjoyed it as they had never been to one before. Night sky could have been better by actually outlining the animals in the constellations to see rather then just using a laser pointer. Presenter was upbeat.

I recently went to this planetarium on the USM campus in Portland. I had been twice before, the last time being about 5 years ago. Today's program was entitled "Dinosaurs at Dusk" and I attended with my sister, who was visiting. There were a total of 9 persons in the theater, which you access within the campus Science building, located... More
