Relaxing Echo Lake and Trails
Jun. 2021 • Friends
Just before arriving In Presque Isle, ME on the left is the road that goes to the park if you are heading south from Presque Isle there is a 3 mile and then 2 mile sign but they are misleading as that is the total distance to the park from that spot not to the road that leads off of Rte 1 so look close for the arrow sign that points you there. (Or use GPS) It is a beautiful ride to the park through rolling hills.
Once at the park usually there is a “Ranger” there to greet you and collect the fees. If you are a Maine Resident seniors are Free other seniors only pay $1. Rates slightly higher for older people but not too much. We just drove in and spent an hour at Echo lake watching the boats pass by and enjoying cool summer breezes. There are several hiking trails including a very steep trail to the top of a hill with great views ( i previously did limb this hill and remember it being very steep ). A nature trail also at the parking area is much less steep.

Lovely Maine Locale
Nov. 2019
Wonderful spot to experience the Maine forest, moose, clean trails and lovely water opportunities. We had a 2-year old moose walk RIGHT in front of our car! She was curious and just ambling around. Wonderful place to observe nature.

Nice picnic...
Aug. 2020
We stopped in for a picnic dinner. Not a large area but quiet and pretty. A couple people were swimming. We did not look at the camping area.

Beautiful State Park!!!
Sep. 2018
I live just 10 minutes from this beautiful state park in northern Maine so I have been going here regularly my whole (long) life. Beautiful, large Echo Lake sits at the bottom of a small, two-peaked, dormant volcano. You can hike the north peak for a beautiful view of the area from the top and then hike the ridge over to south peak too if you want. There's a 'beach' area for swimming in the lake and lots of grassy areas with covered picnic tables. Nice paved parking lot above the beach. Lake is great for boating with camps and homes all around the lake. And the campgrounds is awesome. Big wooded lots! No water, electric or sewer on the campsites as is typical of state parks in Maine, but this is great camping and the prices is so low compared to other places! There is a large covered kitchen area with a sink and running water and electric to plug in your crockpot if you life and a few picnic tables there as well. Connected to that kitchen area are very nice modern bathrooms with great, clean, FREE showers. Highly recommend this lovely state park. JUst 10 minutes south of Presque Isle with plenty of shopping and eating.

Maine's Gem
Aug. 2018
Aroostook State Park is Maine's 1st State Park. Great place for: Camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, nordic skiing, snowshoeing. We regularly hike North and South Peak which are both "little giants" for day hikers-- they are relatively short in length, but are VERY rigorous-- gorgeous views from the tops. The addition of the new Notch trail allows more novice hikers easy access to the ridge between the two peaks, and provides an easier or alternative ascent or descent strategy to either one. There is a very nice, large lean-to on the ridge between the two peaks, and which overlooks Echo Lake below..
The camp sites are very good size; the showers are clean; the common kitchen offers a great dry space for groups.
The two main Park Rangers, Scott and Alan, are the nicest and most knowledgeable guys you could have the pleasure of meeting!

Nice Hiking & Swimming
Jul. 2018 • Family
We have not camped at Aroostook State Park, but we've spent time on the lake swimming and we've hiking the loop trail to South Peak and then over to North Peak. The trail is pretty short - 2.5 miles, but the trail to South Peak is no joke! Incredibly steep. I'm glad the park rangers advise hikers to go up that way because it would make a very difficult descent. Views from North Peak and one look out just prior are beautiful. We didn't see any wildlife but I'm sure they weren't far. Great spot and I'd love to camp here someday. Campsites looked large and the bathhouse looked pretty new and clean.

Great hike and better views
Jul. 2018 • Family
Family trip to the area and stopped by for a hike up the south peak across the ridge trail and then down the north peak. We followed the park rangers advise to go up the South peak first. It was our kids first hike and it was 100% best call to go up the south peak and not attempt to go down. We saw moose tracks along the path as we hiked. On our second day in the area we rented a canoe and spent some time on lake echo. Unfortunately it was a windy day so not as fun as it could have been if we had watched the weather! Great prices for rentals regardless.

This place was dope.

Maine's first state park! Cool in itself, plus all campsites are secluded and surrounded by trees. They have bathrooms and showers! There are trails nearby but I didn't go on any of them, just stayed the night and left. Ranger did say to leave all food in the car as there is a bear that comes by every now and then. Anyway, only $30 and it was private and great and I cannot say enough good things. Enjoy.
