KNOW before you GO!
Jul. 2021
Worthwhile trip but CHECK BEFORE YOU GO!!
Access changes based on weather, road conditions, and paper company permission to use access roads. This can change week-to-week, not just year-to-year. Ask someone with “local knowledge”. Do not trust an internet post.
Local ATV clubs, local guides, and local outdoor businesses (Northwoods Outfitters or Moosehead Motorsports) will know.

B-52 Memorial
Jun. 2020
This is a very nice memorial to the airmen who died in 1963 in a B-52. What isn't nice is the 6-8 miles of rocky, bumpy, road with tons of holes and ruts. We did not realize nor was it stated anywhere that the road wouldn't be paved. After about 4 miles in a Mini Cooper.....we kept going since we had already tried that long. The roads are not well marked and ended up turning around several times. It is a very frustrating drive which I'm sure if we were in a huge truck we could have zoomed there. It took us about 2 hours to get there.

B52 crash site
Sep. 2019 • Couples
Not really a hike as you drive up to the site. Watch the directions as there are a few ways to up to the site.
In remembrance of the crew who lost their lives back in 1963 on a bitter cold winter day.

Would have been nice if we had found it

We heard about the site but since we could not get internet out in the boonies didn’t know the details. We found the sign on the main road for the memorial. We proceeded to drive down the road and it was 8 miles of bumpy road with lots of potholes. We didn’t give up yet. Then we get to what we though could be a trail but it was poorly marked- No directional signage telling how far to the memorial. We walked up the somewhat steep road for at least a half mile and saw nothing. Therefore we turned around and came back down.

If you want tourists to visit something it needs to be a well marked trail with markers with the distance to go. Before you attempt to go to this site make sure you have clear directions on where and how far. Also keep in mind that you are in a very remote area and will not have cell phone or internet service and be cautious. We went down a road and went over a bridge that was not safe for cars and was not clearly marked on the side we went over.

On a positive note the foliage and view was pretty.

Took the gorgeous drive during peak fall season to the B-52 memorial site. The dirt roads were in great condition and frequent markers made locating the site easy. Lovely and very interesting memorial. Visitors were respectful.

Historic B52 Crash Site Preserved in the Middle of the Maine Woods
Aug. 2019
This is a historic memorial site to honor those who crashed their B52 plane in the middle of the Maine woods in 1963. If you are visiting Greenville, check this place out. To get there, you will take Prong Pond Road off Lily Bay Road and follow the signs. The roads are hard packed gravel/logging roads so its a bit bumpy but worth the 7 mile trek. Once you get to elephant mountain there is a small parking area. When you start following the trail in, you will see plane debris everywhere. This is an easy hike meandering through the woods and checking out what has been preserved from the crash. Although it was a tragic event, its nice to see they are not forgotten.

Moving memorial site, well preserved to honor those lost
Aug. 2019
We rented ATVs to make the trek to the B-52 Crash site. The trails to the site were very picturesque, riding through the forest observing beaver dams in ponds along the way. Once we made it to the site it was a short walk to the memorial where you walk through the crash site preserved much as it was on that fateful day in 1963. Seeing the pieces of the wreckage really hits home as to the sacrifices that are brave men and women of the armed forces face each and every day. R.I.P. the crew of the B-52.

Great day

it took us longer to get there than checking out the memorial however everyone must stop and check the memorial. we had our kid 9yrs and 10yrs old and they were amazed on the history of it...before you check the memorial read a little about it to your kids or yourself incase they have any questions while you hike. I highly recommend it for any age. the memorial is not as big as I imagine since its been moved and put back years years ago. it sure was buggy there first week of July 2019

A Memorial to the Men who died in B52 Crash
Sep. 2018
This is a memorial to the men who died in the crash of a B52 on Elephant Mountain. Many pieces of the B52 remain on the ground as part of the memorial. Well worth visiting and learning about history
