Quintessential Maine lobster town...Definitely worth a stop when you are in the area. If you want peace and quiet, this place is it.

This IS Maine
Aug. 2020
Spectacular, timeless fishing village with a smattering of artisans and service providers located in one of Maine's most classic coastal settings. This is the real "Maine". Having lived for twenty plus years in Portland Maine and then moved away, I can vouch that there are few places more quintessential Maine than Stonington. This is a hardscrabble fishing island. At one time granite harvesting was also an industry but that has faded away and what's left is a QUIET tourist destination mixed with locals who live off the sea and/or their artistic talents. This is an eclectic place where mother nature is in charge. The harbor of Stonington is littered with lobster boats and wharfs where fishermen still offload their catch. Nothing moves fast in this town and that's part of the charm. Hundreds of tiny islands dot the harbor and Deer Isle Thoroughfare that sits just off shore. This is the real Maine. Timeless. Genuine. Unhurried. Interesting. If you want shopping and tourist driven entertainment, look elsewhere. If you want to kick back, sip coffee, stroll around, smell the salt air, maybe paddle amongst the islands or hike along the shoreline of Barred Island....then by all means put this on your bucket list.

What a blend of cultures!

The license plates are a reflection of my title. One sees many pick up trucks with Maine plates. Then there are the other cars with out of state plates. Pardon me, if I am over-simplifying. I see this lovely town as a place where hard working residents live and others come to visit from afar.

The main source of livelihood is fishing for lobster. My sense is that many of the famiies have lived in Stonington for generations. Some date back to times (not all that long ago), when people earned their livings by working with granite. Speaking of granite, it is all around and just gorgeous! Steps, fences, landscaping, tables, shelves, retaining walls are just a few of the ways we saw granite woven into the tapestry of Stonington.

On the other hand, there are people like me, coming for a visit. Stonington is a lovely village to get some respite. The pace is slowed down. There are many choices of preserves near by, farms for food, beaches to swim and waters to kayak!

Oh, I cannot forget to mention the arts community. Artisans of all modalities have found their home in and around Stonington. I get it! It is a quiet place where one can receive so much inspiration.

Stonington, beautiful Stonington, I will be back!

Wow! What a beautiful town. I would not want to live there in the winter but it is so beautiful in summer. It has a gorgeous bridge over the ocean!

Beautiful village. Easy access to all surrounding areas on beautiful Deer Isle. I hesitate to talk it up as I would love to visit again and don’t want it crowded. Go during shoulder season. Best time with fewer people. Much of village is vacation homes, but still nice. Quaint laid back place with several good restaurants and possibility of total relaxation.

Charming

Nice little town with a gift shop and a couple restaurants. Only one was open in October. As soon as we parked, we could smell the ocean. Beautiful harbor hustling with boats. Some of the freshest seafood awaits you at the restaurant. Parking is limited, so you may have to walk a bit but its worth it.

Quaint and Magical

Stonington is so beautiful and quaint. It is not touristy and the locals are very friendly and welcoming. The tide is extreme and it is such a delight to watch the lobster fisherman work and haul in their catch. The restaurants serve up fresh food and the local blueberry pie is to die for.

This is where the author of "perfect storm" would ferry out to her island. It's a picture perfect lobster town, very picturesque, quant and fun. I could write a book here, spend a week, hang out and relax. Town hotels are booked up way in advance so think ahead. Great town, nice people a go to place.

Quaint, quiet one street village
Sep. 2019 • Family
This was a one night stay whilst on a road trip with the parents and the boy child. We stayed at the highly recommended Inn on the Harbor for the night. We were able to walk the flower filled calm street that hugged the Bay. Lobster men hustled their comings and going in the very early dawn and then again in the afternoon. There are a handful of restaurants to eat, we had the super delicious Acadia House for supper. There are also a handful of cute shops to buy local goods. 44 North Coffee is also located here and has the most delicious pour overs that I’ve ever had. A miniature house ‘museum’ sits freely in the town center with a sign to tell you about it. I wish we had two nights but the one we had was wonderful.

Beautiful town

The shops and restaurants and a ferry boat to Isle au Haut makes it all worth spending time there. Being an active fishing village makes for an interesting village to visit.
