I just inherited a nautical-themed lamp -- a wooden sailing ship with a wooden lampshade -- that was handcrafted by inmates at Thomaston and bought by my late father many years ago while vacationing in Maine. Having forgotten the name of where he and my mom got it, I googled for Maine prisons and came across the Maine State Prison showroom website. I was amazed at the display of handcrafted items inside. Now I'm anxious to make a trip to Maine to visit this wonderful store, and perhaps bring a bunch of items home with me. I'll need to pull my trailer behind my motorcycle to have enough space to pack all the goodies I buy! I have a friend in Augusta, so it might be time to go visit him and make a side trip to Thomaston. Oh yeah, I can smell a road trip to Maine coming this summer! I can hardly wait! And with the store hours posted it won't be an inconvenience to go. It appears that the inmates do some wonderful work, atypical of the things one finds these days (this is surely no Chinese dollar-store junk). And since those who are incarcerated have a lot of time on their hands, this is a wonderful way for them to keep busy, stay out of trouble, be industrious and productive, and maybe even learn a trade or gain some skills that could benefit them when they get out of prison. I would harbor no resentment that these items are made by people with a criminal past. I would commend them for the quality workmanship of those items they're producing.
