Interesting ruins. You are allowed to wander freely, without an irritating tour guide. They also give guided tours (only in french, of course.) The tours are very interesting and you can walk to the top of two of them. More area is roped off than I would prefer, but still there was a lot to see.

Approaching the Tours de Merle is like driving through Lord of the Rings country - forests and great hills, twisting roads and rocky outcrops. The first glimpse is magical and it just gets better! You are given a basic sheet of the history in English which tells you most of the important information. We were there at just gone 1000 and had... More

Seems out of the lords of the rings when you see it first time. Definitively worth the visit, having noticed that it is quite far from any big city.

The remains of this feudal fortress from the twelfth and fifteenth centuries are very interesting to visit. Although access is limited, and at times quite hard on your legs too, the insight into the life of the medieval village and noblemen is fascinating. Well worth a trip if you are in the area but be aware, if you are travelling... More
