About
The Endangered Primate Rescue Center is a not for profit project dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of Vietnam's endangered and critically endangered primate species. First established in 1993, through a collaboration between Frankfurt Zoological Society and Cuc Phuong National Park, the center is presently managed under the umbrella of the Vietnam Primate Conservation Program, jointly operated by Zoo Leipzig and Cuc Phuong National Park. More than 180 animals have been born at the center, some being the first of their species to be born in captivity, including the critically endangered Cat Ba langur, Delacours langur and the Grey shanked douc langur.

We were impressed with what great work the Endangered Primate Rescue Center is doing! Our tour was fascinating and the tour guide very knowledgeable and professional. My only critique is I wished we could have spent a bit more time watching the animals. It was a unique experience and obviously a very needed service they are providing for the endangered native monkeys and apes of Vietnam. I’m grateful for their good works, and highly recommend a visit here for anyone who cares about animal welfare and wildlife preservation.

We are a family of 5 who volunteered at the EPRC (Endangered Primate Rescue Center) for a week. It was great. An amazing experience for the
whole family. We cut food for the monkeys, repaired cages, fed the monkeys, built and installed enrichments items, etc. We all learned a lot about these endangered animals. The kids (aged 15, 14 and 12) loved the experience too. It
was quite sad to leave after this week.
We saw and experienced so many beautiful animals, such as the small and beautiful lorises!
We stayed in a very nice room 300 meters from the Rescue Center and 1.3 kilometers from the village. The Turtle Conservation Center and Save Vietnam Wildlife Center are 100 meters of the EPRC, so we were able to visit them too.
In summary, a great volunteering week with friendly staff and beautiful animals!

We were lucky enough to book a private tour with the head keeper and director and spent about 1.5 hours learning about the primates
Booked via the website - there is a new director who is happy to do the tours
You get to spend a lot more time so a good option if a real animal lover / interested in the primate centre

we were doing a private tour around ninh binh and had been really looking forward to visiting hear . we have visited many animal rescue centres around the world .
we were so disappointed by our visit here . we arrived at 1030 and were told it was closed in the morning even though all the signage and brochures said it should be open . We then returned at 130 pm and met our guide . you must go through the centre with a guide. Our guide could have not been more useless if he tried . It was very quiet at the centre but he rushed us through. He would only show us about 5 enclosures . we would stop he would say " that is a red legged langur as it has red legs " then tell us to move on . we rushed through the centre in 20 minutes , we had been expecting to spend several hours there . they have a great collection of rare primates . The living conditions are however poor . If managed well it could be a brilliant centre.

I volunteered here for 10 days, and it was a great experience. I learnt so much from all the staff, and really felt welcome amongst the Vietnamese keepers, despite them speaking minimal if no English. If you want to gain valuable knowledge and experience about primates then I would highly recommend volunteering here.

Gosh didn't realize all these primates were so endangered. I did also feel sad they didn't have more space for the primates to roam about. The tour around here is very short and I wished it was slowed downa touch so that I could listen and take photos. Valiant effort to save the langurs.

We had a guide who’s English was great and who knew a great deal about the animals in the rescue centre. We learned a lot about the different species of primates, and of all the challenges the primates face once they leave the safe centre. It’s therefore great to see the people at the centre working hard to help safe these primates. Hopefully in the future the national parks in Vietnam will be a safe place too so more primates can be released in the wild.

The rescue center is near the Cuc Phuong national park's entrance and can only be visited with a guide. It's approx. 400m walk from the entrance.
The rescue center seems rather legit and the your guide was able to tell us a lot about the work they do. However, it was a bit depressing to see the monkeys in small cages. Nonetheless, the rescue center seems to be doing important work, rescuing monkeys from poachers and educating the locals.

The tour gives you lots of information on the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam and South East Asia. The guides are very knowledgeable and speak good English. You see the primate, turtle and carnivore centres.
We were a little disappointed though. You don't see many animals and those you do see are in small cages and look sad. The tour is very quick and you don't get long to look around. We went there in the hopes of seeing pangolins, which feature heavily on their website and advertising, only to be told we would have to come back later and pay 450,000 dong each. The only things we saw were langurs, gibbons, binturongs (very cool!) and turtles. No lorris or linsang either.
Overall though I think the tour is worth doing, wildlife enthusiasts shouldn't expect much. It's worth the money but you get what you pay for.

Dear Roe77,
Thank you for your visit to our center and your review.
Cuc Phuong tour is a really basic tour for visitors, and because of the number of tourists, it is impossible for Cuc Phuong guides to extend the tour too much.
The primates are kept in enclosures (which are not small!), however only some will remain here forever. Many of them just stay here for rehabilitation and will be released once their health and wild behavior allow. Those who are in rehabilitation should not be in contact with humans a lot, and that is why you cannot see majority of them.
We provide life enrichment for them everyday, and probably you didn't come at the time when it is provided. You can check out our Website or Facebook for the enrichment.
If you are an animal enthusiast, you should know that lorises are nocturnal. Therefore, visitors are not allowed to see them in daylight. EPRC has a special night loris tour though. You can check the info on our Website.
We hope to see you again in the future.

Did you book directly with the EPRC? I have used their website to try to book an expert tour but have not had a confirmation back - I dont want to do the National Park full day tour. Any advice?
Written March 12, 2018
We just turned up at the park gate with our driver, paid the charge and walked down to the centre - did the tour (very good) and then walked back to our car and did the rest of the park. No hassle, no problem, no need for any special booking. I did use their website to ask for an expert tour and got no response. Guess it’s low on their priorities. Having done the ordinary tour I suspect they want to minimise the stress on the primates by limiting the tours and their duration - but it would have been nice to get a reply.

Whether i should spend one of my few days in Hanoi taking a day trip to Cue Phuong. From reading the reviews, I believe I would be quite disappointed with the endangered primate center as I'm accustomed to US zoos in which the primates are not kept in small cages.

Dear Sally S,
About our center, we are pretty sure that our enclosures are not *that* small. We are still trying to extend our size, however it is dependent on donations every year. A zoo is totally different from a rescue center, as the animals stay in the zoos FOREVER. In a rescue center like EPRC, many animals stay here just temporarily until when they are released.
At our center, besides the basic Cuc Phuong tour (which is not related to us) lasting 15 minutes, you can book our own Expert Tour or our Loris Night Tour. More info can be seen on our website.
Best regards,
Huyen Tran
