The Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place. From its earliest days as a fishing and shipping port to its mid-19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Cape Ann boasts a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial, and artistic achievement. The Museum's fine art collection includes the largest grouping of works by native son and renowned marine artist, Fitz Henry Lane, as well as work by other prominent painters and sculptors who lived on, visited or were inspired by Cape Ann. The work of contemporary Cape Ann artists is also collected and exhibited. The permanent collection includes fine and decorative arts, and artifacts from the major industries of the area - the fisheries and granite quarrying. Founded in 1873 as the Cape Ann Scientific and Literary Association, today the Museum is a vibrant cultural center that includes galleries, an auditorium, library/archives, a children's activity center, two sculpture gardens and two historic homes. In addition to its permanent collections, the Museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibitions throughout the year as well as related programs and events. Visit us today to discover the treasures of Cape Ann.

This museum recently underwent a complete restoration and it shows. Impeccable! The exhibits are well laid out and represent some of the finest artists of the Cape Ann school. It is not huge... you can spend a leisurely few hours and see it all. We've visited several times and it never fails to impress!

We had been to the museum briefly for a performance a few years ago and finally made it back for a visit. It was a great experience. It's in downtown Gloucester an there's plenty of parking. They have a lot of nautical material -- befitting Cape Ann's maritime past (and present), We really loved the large collection of nautical paintings... More

Great place to learn about the towns beginning. Well laid out and knowledgable staff. Has a well stocked archive to find out family history and old residents. The Quarry history was interesting as well. Cool models!

Cape Ann Museum is an exceptional museum highlighting some of Cape Ann's most distinquished artists past and present. It is a relatively small museum that can be enjoyed in less than a day with displays of artists who are currently working as well as those long gone. We love to bring out of town guests to the museum to enjoy... More

With the renovation several years ago, this museum became even more of a must-see destination. The Fitz Henry Lane collection is unparalleled. The special exhibits are consistently excellent. The lectures, walks and other programming enrich one's experience of the museum and the city. Cape Ann Museum does a great job of showing and explaining the deep history of America's oldest... More

There are many old and antique items and paintings here as well as several displays of maritime history. All is arranged very artfully and appealing. We fully enjoyed our visit. I am an artist so I especially enjoyed the paintings.
