About
The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is a nationally recognized, year-round cultural institution that fuses the creative energy of America’s oldest active art colony with the natural beauty of outer Cape Cod that has inspired artists for generations. PAAM was established in 1914 by a group of artists and townspeople to build a permanent collection of works by artists of outer Cape Cod, and to exhibit art that would allow for unification within the community. In 2014, PAAM celebrated its Centennial year, with programming and exhibitions that highlighted significant artists, artwork, and events that contributed to PAAM becoming the vital cultural institution it is today. Integral to the community comprising the Provincetown Art Colony, PAAM embodies the qualities that make Provincetown an enduring American center for the arts, and serves as Cape Cod’s most widely-attended art museum.

this is a small museum. you can generally see everything in around an hour to 1 1/2 hrs. nevertheless, it is a gem with interesting exhibits and comfortable space. staff are friendly and helpful. lighting and organization are fine. museum is fully compliant on fighting COVID, so you should register for an entry in advance and be prepared for a lecture on precautions. in the past, they had a nice little bookstore, but that is unfortunately closed with the virus. you can order items online.

This is a museum showcasing the artists of Provincetown. The museum is small so it takes about an hour and a half to see the exhibits. While we there, there was a life size display of the Pilgrims landing on Cape Cod in 1620. The exhibit was entitled "The Arrival 1620" by Mimi Gross.

We visited the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and had an incredible experience. This hidden gem of a musem features works by local artists as well as museum exhibitions. We saw Inside the Forbidden City, photographs of Ground Zero by Joel Meyerowitz. It was moving and beautiful at the same time. The museum is going through a renovation and the new galleries are gorgeous. I would recommend this as a must when you visit Cape Cod.

This is totally worth visiting. It's free after 5pm on Fridays! A small museum, but the art is very rich. We have been to p-town many times but never walked to the east end to see this museum. SO glad we found it!

I come from a smaller city with much better art, (Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, WI) and found the pretentiousness amusing. It didn't help that it was AFTER paying $10.00 admission the staff explained that the Hopper lecture had started and was full, with no room to see the exhibit until after...."about 20 minutes".Had an interaction with an old employee who was condescending and unwelcoming. An hour of waiting later, I was tired of looking at the silent auction fund raiser items/tiles (YAWN). HMM, thought about just saying that a refund was in order. I waited it out, saw some Hopper sketches, yawn, and caught part of the Hopper lecture, again yawn. There is a definite prejudice toward natives CCodders and open gays; or is it common and acceptable to be rude here? Love art, and have been to MANY free art museums with much more to offer.

On my last day in Provincetown I strolled to PAAM just to explore this small but rather lovely Gallery / Museum and to view their temporary exhibitions . I had heard that they had or were in the process of acquiring this largely unseen collection of sketches/ drawings and other material of legendary artist Edward Hopper( my favourite painter of the 20th century ) and his wife Josephine that had been left in his Cape Cod studio but understood it wasn't going to be on display until September . Imagine them my amazement to discover that it had already been installed and was able to view it in two interlinked rooms . A wonderful surprise and an incredible collection of drawings .The Jo Hopper's are drawings and some watercolours . The Edward Hopper comprises satiric personal cartoons , colour notes for oil paintings and wonderful preparatory drawings for some of his most famous works such as Cape Cod Morning . And on top of this there are letters , diaries certificates and other pieces of personal ephemera. It's breathtaking and wonderful , a real coup for the Museum. And this is further enhanced by some fascinating temporary exhibitions of notable modern artists with local connections.
So think PAAM is a really worthwhile visit whilst in Provincetown and if you are remotely interested in Edward Hopper it's an absolutely essential call !

We much enjoyed the picture on display for the auction that benefits the museum. Great photo exhibit! It's a nice, airconditioned place to take a break from the crowds

This is the place to experience the best of Provincetown art and survey its history-- from Charles Hawthorne and Edward Hopper to abstract expressionists greats, like Hans Hoffman, to current-day experimenters. A medium-sized museum, it usually has two or three exhibits running simultaneously, each of which allows you to look slowly and in-depth at the art on display, and think about how Provincetown itself connects the work of those who have visited and created there for many decades. There's always something inspiring and fresh to see. Extra bonus: Excellent book selection and other gifts in the museum store.

Good evening. I am searching for information on Murray M Wax and in particuar two water color paintings of nude men. I have been informed that the paintings were most likely from the 1940s while he lived in New York. I will attempt to contact the Association tomorrow (Saturday the 11th). Please accept my thanks for any assistance you may provide. Bob Dumais
