- smittyncCharlotte, North Carolina367 contributionsThe museum is bigger than it looks.I was amazed at how many rooms the museum had. It is just a maze of rooms and the displays are beautiful. I learned a lot about glass making and how it started in Sandwich. They also had a glass blower put on a demonstration which was very interesting.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 3, 2023
- ShellGirl057East Aurora, New York96 contributionsTop RateDepends how you look at it. Is it just inanimate glass objects and nothing more or do these objects give us a glimpse into a world we didn’t have the privilege to be alive in and witness? I’m going with the latter. Such lovingly preserved history. These people really care about preserving Sandwich’s past. I also have to add that we were treated more than fairly when returning/exchanging a mail order item from their online shop. Wonderful people.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 20, 2023
- jastine100 contributionsInteresting MuseumMy sister and I visited the Sandwich Glass Museum while we were vacationing in Cape Cod. Admission to the museum is $12. Just as we arrived, a tour bus was unloading to visit the museum. It was crowded, but we were still able to enjoy the displays. We started with a glass blowing demonstration, which was interesting. Then we watched a movie about the history of glass blowing in Massachusetts. There are at least 12 rooms in the museum, each one showcasing a different kind of glass and explaining some of the history. The gift shop has jewelry and other items made of glass for purchase. We enjoyed our visit to the museum.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 20, 2023
- mainstreetmanBourne, Massachusetts948 contributionsFantastic rainy day activityWe spent rainy day here, which was perfect. It was interesting to see all the blown glass and pressed glass. I learned a lot of history about the area. Best part of all was the glass blowing demonstration which happens every hour on the hour and the film immediately before that. Not worth a trip for toddlers, but kids from third grade on up will enjoy the glass blowing demonstration. We got a pass at a local library so it was free.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024
- RICART75Peru, Indiana2,301 contributionsReal uplift...It's been a couple decades since our last visit, so not sure what has changed or not . Either way, it was a joy to visit again. The introductory film, and live glass blowing demonstration were both informative and interesting. The museum's displays provided an aesthetically impressive history of the development and craftmanship of this glass making icon. It's a real uplift being in the presence of inspired creation and appreciated beauty.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 1, 2024
- drkiki2015Washougal, Washington492 contributionsSandwich's history of glassWish we had more time here but had to leave after an hour to make a lunch reservation. Fascinating history and so many examples of different glass eras! The orientation movie was helpful for background, but 20 minutes seemed too long. We had to miss the special/more contemporary galleries but did see the glassblower in action.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 8, 2024

This was so interesting! I really enjoyed the live demonstration (check in advance for the schedule), COVID preventative measures are followed very well and we felt really safe. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth the trip and admission. I have done at least 4 glassblowing classes myself, and learned A LOT more about the craft and the history. I have a new appreciation for these artisans. One of their displays was so unique! I’ve never see anything like it.

The glass items are beautiful and a lot of different pieces, including jewelry, to choose from, but on the pricey side. What I enjoyed about this stop was the demonstration that a man gave on how to create something out of glass. He did an excellent job of explaining. He created a glass cat and a glass goblet, and watching him doing both kept my attention, especially the goblet. He answered questions after his demonstration. Outside was a small display of glass flowers in a circular pattern which was pretty.

Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod, having been settled in 1637. In 1825, Deming Jarves chose Sandwich as the location for a glass factory – not because of abundant beach sand (which is much too impure for making quality glass) but because of access to shipping, availability of timber to fire the furnaces and marsh grass for packing the finished product. Sandwich Glass Museum tells this story through its mostly chronological displays of glass produced here. Complimentary glass blowing demonstrations take place on the hour.

Really enjoyed this museum! The glassblowing demonstration was interesting, and we enjoyed getting to wander the museum and see all of the different types of glass and glass artwork. At the moment there is a special exhibit featuring neon/glass/electric artwork that was super cool!
One person in our group used a wheelchair--the Sandwich Glass Museum was all on one level. There were no steps inside the museum and the accessible ramp is right at the front entrance. We encountered a couple of tight corners and too-small display nooks, and the bathroom was a little small, but overall, we all had a blast and would totally recommend checking out this museum!

The SHM is on the smaller end of a mid sized museum. It was a very wide, varied selection of fabulous glassworks. Occasionally staff do informative presentations on making glassworks. There is a good gift shop. The staff is professional, knowledgeable and helpful.

I loved this museum and the extensive collection of pieces they had. They are arranged oldest to newest so enjoyed the progression. Spent about an hour in there and was rushed by my daughter. Unless you really love glass and historical pieces you might need less time.

The Museum provides interesting interactive exhibits and a glass blowing demonstration. I especially enjoyed The Mixing Room exhibit. Their collection of glass is extensive. I wish the Hirschmann Theater was open to visitors when I was there.

Enjoyed watching a demonstration of how glass objects are made. The craftsman did a good job of explaining the process as he worked. Can't say that the type of glass featured was particularly attractive to me. I've seen more beautiful glass collections in museums in Europe. We spent about an hour there. There is free parking in front. Rest rooms were very clean.

Decided to stop as this was not on our radar. Each hour one of the glass blowers gives a 20 minute demonstration of forming the glass from oven to finishing on2 or 3 different objects. It is very interesting. A number of glass works are on display and counter sales of various glass jewelry. Made a personal purchase as well as some gifts. Worth the stop.

We really enjoyed the exhibits and the history of glass making. Having an actual artisan as you first enter was a great touch to bring you into the world of glass making. It was great reading and learning about the role Sandwich, MA played in glass making in America. At the end in the gift you may find a kind glass piece for those who enjoy picking up trinkets here and there.

Is this appropriate for children ages 5-8?
Written July 10, 2018
Sorry for the delay. I agree. A 15-20 minute visit at most and that’s if you ask which piece of glass is their favorite in every room.

I would like to know what days/hours you are open. Also I would like to know if there are any other
places in your area I could visit. We are not familiar with this area at all and after seeing your place,
we would like to see anything else that may be in your area.
Also, we would like to know if there are any "Savors" or/and "Goodwill" stores in the area. We like to go
in these stores because we purchase things for Foster kids/needy people.
I would appreciate any info you can give me.
Thank you so much,
Elaine
