We decided that we wanted to go castle hunting. Worcester wasn't far so we sought out Bancroft Tower. It was in a beautiful location. There is green grass, the leaves on the trees were starting to change color and we even see cherry blossoms on the neighborhood trees on our way there. The tower was mysterious and encouraged me to learn more. It was built in 1900 in memory of George Bancroft a native politician, historian and statesman. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is in Salisbury Park one of the three highest points in the city for an exceptional view.

On Mondays, there are not that many choices to play "tourist", as so many Museums, Botanical Gardens, and other attractions are closed. So, on this gloomy, overcast Monday (6/29), we set out to visit this tower.
Small Salisbury Park is located smack in the middle of a residential area with large homes, and very tall trees. We had to ask three local (yes, local) people for directions. They were all very nice, and tried to be helpful, but, the first two knew nothing about any tower in any park in that area, although, we were all a few short blocks away.
When we finally, found it, we were delighted. From reviews, we expected something smaller, and artificial looking. This tower sits on top of Prospect Hill, in the northwestern end of Worcester. One of the City's prominent citizens erected this tower as a monument to honor George Bancroft, who among many other great achievements, founded the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. G. Bancroft was born at the foot of this hill, thus the choice of site.
The tower is 56 feet high, and is constructed of boulders, cobblestones, and rock-faced granite. It used to be open to the public, but, since it stands unguarded, criminal activity began taking place there, so, it had to be closed. The surroundings are beautiful, and we were very impressed by this "monument" honoring a great citizen of Worcester.

We drove up the steep hill to get up to this tower. It's and odd but interesting Tower on top of a steep hill. Unfortunately, the tower doors are closed to prevent vagrants from settling in the structure, so you can't do much more than walk around the outside and take a few pictures. interesting structure but not worth going out of you way to get to it.

Bancroft Tower is accessible anytime as a park, but the tower itself is only open on Sundays in October. We still stopped by the get a look at the structure, which is interesting. It's like a small piece of medieval history near downtown Worcester! (Though it was built in 1900.) It's worth a quick visit, if just to check it out!
Parking is available, and there's charge for visiting.

The tower was built by George Bancroft as a folly. It has been open since it was built. Shakespearen plays are performed here during the summer.

Great view of the city and a definite anomoly in this mill town. It stands by itself with no apparent purpose but is fun to explore and see the view as it is high up on a hill with woods surrounding it. Used to be a hangout for druggies and gays but is now cleaned up and romantic even.

On Sundays in October, this tower is open to the public. You can examine the inside and climb the narrow spiral staircase to the top of the turret where a Parks volunteer awaits to give you a 360 degree visual tour of the sights. The view is far and beautiful & I imagine at the end of the month the foliage would add to that beauty. Admission is free but donations are accepted ($1 suggested). Limited on street parking is available. A nice side trip if you live in or visit the area.

This is public property and needs to be open to the public. Just because the politician and his friends live near it is no reason it should be closed.

Does anyone know if the inside of the Tower is scheduled to be open to the public: October of 2019. In the past the DCR Park's Department has opened the Castle on Saturdays during the month of October.
Thank you

“Park Spirit of Worcester” is a non profit that has been responsible for getting volunteers to open & staff the tower in past years. Their website says it will be open on Sundays in October, weather permitting, but they do not say what the hours are.
