A moving and highly informative memorial and museum to the South African armed forces. The accounts of the conflict in Delville Wood bring to life the horror of war and the bravery shown by the soldiers. The surrounding woodland is beautiful but with the outline of trenches and shell holes still clearly visible.

We stopped at this memorial to pass some time on the way to the ferry port at Calais. My grandfather was one of the few South Africans to survive Delville Woods and so this place has a special significance for me. The memorial/museum is very interesting and a moving tribute to those South Africans who fought in the 1st and 2nd world wars et al. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to stroll through the woods too so I would recommend that visitors set aside an hour at least to go through the museum and the woods.

We spent a very pleasant three days visiting sites of the fighting of over 100 years ago, and hunting for relics from that fighting.

A very emotive place to visit if you have read the history of Delville Wood. 100 years to the day, we visited Delville Wood to lay a commemorative wreath for a great uncle who was wounded during trench clearance attacks.but later died of his wounds.Quite a large site to walk around but get a good map / gude book and it is no problem. Unfortunately the visitors centre and nnuseum were clos.ed (it was a Monday)

Just on the outskirts of Longueval, sits Delville Wood, nestled in the wood now sits the memorial to South Africans of WW1 & WW2. There is a nice walk up to this memorial through the trees. You can also walk through the forest. Memorial is so beautifully peaceful and the only thing you tend to hear is the birds chirping. Inside the memorial is well laid out and like all others I have visited, it h is kept immaculately. Truly worth a visit.

Easy free car park leads onto toilets before you get the the memorial. At one of the most famous WW1 battle sites a museum leads you into the reasons why SA troops were in France, stories and first hand accounts and then effects of the battle, an amazing and well cared for and presented memorial. The architecture is stunning, well worth a visit.

As was usual after an action with many losses and no movement of the line all the dead were buried nearby and wooden crosses placed with their service number to mark each grave. The stonework and architecture of all CWG places is harmonious and sombre, respectful not triumphal. As such is Delville Wood.

Visited Delville Wood War memorial on a beautiful day. Magnificent memorial to all South Africans killed on the Somme. On of the highlights of my trip to the Somme. Situated in beautiful surroundings. Great visitor centre which is admission free. Well worth a visit.

There is something not right about rating such a memorial, but it would be correct to say it is a fitting memorial to the South Africans who gave their lives in Delville Wood and other theatres in WW1. The impressive memorial is set in Delville Woods a short walk from the road and the main building replicating a Cape Fort includes an interesting museum telling the story of South Africa's involving in WW1 and also focusing on the tragedy of the RMS Mendi. On a practical basis there is plenty of parking and also toilets at the reception building.

To be honest I had never heard of the South African campaign at Delville Woods, my husband included it on our tour as I'm South African. Very, very interesting museum which really show cases the South African contribution to the Somme and WW1 in France.
Cemetery is large but the South African graves can be picked out by the carving of a bucks head, once you spot that you can pick them out much quicker. There are thousands of British and a hand full of Saffa, kiwi and Ozzie soldiers here. There is a centre guide in the wall on the right when you enter if you want to look up names.
Opposite the cemetery across a big grassy area in the South African memorial. Walk down the main walkway and into the building at the end. Free entry.
Lots of interesting info about South African fighting in WW1. Very interesting.
You could spend an hour here in total.
Free toilets and parking.
You will battle to find cafes or take sways so pack snacks.

Is there now a cafe or any kind of refreshment area at the new Delville Wood Visitors' Centre?
Written July 27, 2016
The center was still closed for refurbishment when I visited. The website listed on this page has updates.
