I came here on a Saturday afternoon during the Easter weekend. I was here for about 3 hours and it was splendid! I LOVE museums and this one was great! I loved learning about the maritime history of Detroit and the various ferries, passenger steamers, etc. that were built during that time! Waking through the museum gave me the opportunity... More

My family wasn't sure about what to expect when we got to the museum but were very surprised. The museum has lots of hands on activities for the kids along with a beautiful entry way recreation. The pilot house and the ship steering were highlights for the whole family. The museum is free. I've paid for museums that aren't as... More

I have been coming here as a kid since 1973. The pilothouse of the Ford Motor Company steamer William Clay Ford has been attached to the river side of the building so you can get the same view as a great lakes sailor. Grassy areas on either side are great for Boat watching while picnicing and the boat model collection... More

Such a great experience. You can learn a lot from people who are either working or volunteering (majority of them are volunteers) enjoy a inside and outside view.

This museum is free but there may be a fee for driving on Belle Isle. Plan to stay about an hour. Check the internet for hours of operation which may vary. Typically it is not crowded and is open from 11 am to 4 pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and is always free. Donations are accepted. If you drive too... More

Took the kids who loved it. Cool all the way through. Hands on activities, historical items and the freighter pilothouse to top it all off. A must see if on Belle Isle.

Walking in you will find very elegant wooden room as if walking into a mansion. The museum itself is small but the views of Canada are beautiful. There are Quite a few hands on exhibits and the exhibits are very educational

As you walk in you think you are walking into a church. It is an amazing room that is from one of the old steamers that sailed the Great Lakes. Beautiful carved wood and stain glass. There are many hands on exhibits that actually work and teach about navigation. There is some history of the Great Lakes, models of ships,... More

The Dossin is a modest museum, but is actually very interesting. There are many exhibits presented in creative, and in many cases, a hands on way. Very fun for kids and adults alike. Set on the south shore of Belle Isle it faces out to the Canadian shoreline a mile across the Detroit River. What a great view from the... More

We stopped almost as a lark and are glad we did. There is a real submarine periscope that one can use to see across the river. The actual Captain's deck of a freighter is at one end of the museum overlooking the river. It just happened that a large freighter passed right in front of us and were able to... More
