About
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is an accessible green space in an urban landscape and includes two distinct ecosystems, a wetland around Swan Lake and a rocky, Garry oak-forest on top of Christmas Hill. Both habitats are home to an incredible array of rare and threatened native plants and wild animals. The Sanctuary is a living classroom fostering a greater understanding of nature through direct experience. Educational programs are available for all ages that encourage stewardship of the natural environment. To protect our native plants and wildlife (particularly ground nesting birds), please remember that dogs are not permitted in the Sanctuary. Managed by a non-profit society, this urban refuge provides an exceptional opportunity to bring people and nature together. We welcome you to explore and discover! Free admission, $5 suggested donation.

Really worth a stop, the main Swan Lake portion only takes about 30–40 minutes to walk. Nice scenery, and the lake is really beautiful

This lake is not well maintained with plastic litter floating. The lake and parking spaces need more tlc from Greater Victoria administration.

Visited here in February 2020. Walk was beautiful and there were a lot of birds. Nature center was interesting and volunteers were helpful and informative. Amazing to be surrounded by the city but feel like you were out in the country.

We have been here before, but always in summer. An early spring visit brought the pleasure of seeing plants and shrubs begin to open up. There were lots of birds to be admired, with ducks and cormorants much in evidence. This is a splendid nature preserve close to the city. Highly recommended.

This is a great place to enjoy nature. Safe trails you get a mixture of forest and lake areas. A wonderful bird and plant sanctuary. They also have a nature house where you can see many displays.

While staying in downtown Victoria, we looked up this beautiful nature trail. So glad we did! Located in the middle of residential home area, and easy trail walk with lots of birds, and friendly people along the way. Lots of large water lilies too.

Although difficult to find [try "GOOGLE MAPS"], its really worthwhile. I ultimately found that the best access was to go to the "Municipal/Police Buildings" in Saanich... and then ask someone. The access to the trial was though natural vegetation... but once near "SWAN LAKE" the trail is excellent, and the views are "most memorable"... One might be amazed thinking that this lake trail is surrounded by a very built up area! The vegetation varies-- but do not be surprised to see Mallard ducks sitting on a bridge or walkway across the lake. On a sunny day the colours and vegetation are "simply outstanding"!! It is definitely "a hidden gem"... and worthy of a visit!

I hope that this Review has been helpful!

Not far from downtown is this really beautiful sanctuary. The floating bridge and boardwalks are quite accessible for folks of many abilities, and then it turns into a dirt path through some shallow woods, which is really nice as well but perhaps less accessible. Lots of ducks, and a cute information center as well.

While visiting relatives in Victoria, we spent a wonderful Sunday afternoon in Saanich at the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. Who knew that a sanctuary of this size could be found in the greater Victoria area, at times you did not feel you were even in the city! We walked the entire packed gravel loop trail and boardwalk that extends around Swan Lake taking us a little over an hour. The entire loop was well maintained and uncrowded, even on a Sunday afternoon! The trail was mostly flat, easily negotiable though it maybe not be accessible by all. No dogs because of the resident duck population, which was reasonable to see. We brought along a picnic lunch which we enjoyed on one of the well-placed benches overlooking the lake wetlands. Unfortunately, we did not have time to check out either the on-site Visitor Centre or trek up to Christmas Hill, maybe next time!
