we stayed for a bit of time when we were on our way to snorkelling trip. the color is magical, different shades of clear blueness which is so dream-like. it is formed by tiny broken "sango" (coral bones) and it is so interesting, breathtaking and stunning when you are right there. a true natural wonder to be treasured! :-P

Stunning. Well preserved. Worth the effort to come to iriomote jima. Hope they can maintain this coral reef for years and decades to come.

This tiny island is just 15 min off the shore from Uehara. We took a short boat ride to get there and put on our goggles and fins on the little island. We only needed to swim less than 50 meters before seeing all the fish and coral under the sea. It was fantastic and we would definitely want to go back again.

This is an island made of coral pieces brought by sea current.
The size and the location keep changing.
You will find plural tour organizers to bring you to this island in Iriomote (there is no other alternatives...). They will rent you snorkeling equipments as well.
I saw flow fish, colorful corals, etc.

We stopped here on our way back from snorkeling. The tide was up so not much of the coral island was showing, but it was a good time and a fun diversion! The snorkeling on Iriomote is still beautiful, the coral has not been trampled like it is in Hawaii. The colorful reef and the numerous fish make it a great snorkeling spot. We also dove in Iriomote and loved it!

A coral shell island that almost vanishes at high tide only to reveal itself as an oasis for boaters to stop by in the middle of the sea.
Waters are pristine and fish life pretty good. However a good portion of the coral is dead and there are better snorkelling areas nearby. It gets pretty crowded sometimes with many boats driving up the coral shell beach to drop off revellers.

Barasu island is made of corals just 10 minutes by boat from Iriomote island. You can go snorkelling or just sunbake. The underwater world is great for beginners, not so much for spoiled divers ;)

A 10-minute boat ride from Uehara Port on Iriomote Island, this island is made of coral. They say the area of the island changes depending on the tide, and when we went there it was underwater and shallow, but we managed to get down. It was a bit different from Barras Island, which I often see in photos and videos, but I'm glad I made it there.

We snorkelled in a spot near Barras Island and met some laid-back sea turtles.

By the way, I was on a day trip from Ishigaki Island, kayaking + Pinaisara Waterfall in the morning and snorkeling around Barras Island in the afternoon. If you are exercising normally, you will be fine, but if you are not exercising much, it may be a slightly harder journey.

I went there on a snorkeling tour. We landed while snorkeling near Barasu Island. It feels like a smaller version of Phantom Island or Hatenohama, but it's not a place where you can just land and relax. Various tours stop by in turn, so I think your stay will be about 15 minutes after landing and taking a commemorative photo. Also, since it's a mountain made of coral fragments, it hurts to walk on bare feet with just fins. If the sun is shining, you can see the emerald green sea.
