About an hour from Seoul, this is a good trip option. The fortress takes a good long walk to go around if you want to hit all the gates, and there are great spots for photos.

It never closes, only the attractions around it (ie 5PM). Best time I like to visit was late afternoon, early evening to see lights displaying wall in certain areas.
