Cerro Negro is a must do for anyone visiting Leon! It's interplanetary landscape and wonderful views of the surrounding volcano family are truly breathtaking! We boarded down with Quetzaltrekkers and would also highly recommend them for the sunset session!

We did our sandboarding tour through Sonati tours and it was an awesome experience! A group of four of us went up with our guide and it was great. The hike up was strenuous and a good 45 min. We went on the 8am tour which was less hot than I imagine the 1pm would be. The hard hike up... More

We went on the volcano boarding tour up cerro negro and really enjoyed it. It's about an hour's drive outside of Leon, and then an hour to an hour and a half hike up the volcano depending on how fit your group is. Take at least 2 litres of water, sun cream and a hat for the hike. The view... More

The volcanoboarding is a lot of fun. I was a little nervous that it would be just fast and uncontrollable, but the guides provided good instructions about how to control the board. Betsi, Miguel and Cormac definately had some great energy and told interesting stories about the volcanoes. Food and snacks were provided through the day. We had some great... More

Cerro Negro isn't really accessible without a guide/guided tour. It's quite a ways out of town (30 minutes tops) and the route in is through a labyrinth of farm roads. The volcano boarding tour with Tierra Tours was totally worth it. Unreal experience.

I'm from the US and live a few miles from Cero Negro. I've never done the volcanoboarding thing and probably never will. We drive there in our pickup truck, arriving by 7AM so by the time we leave, the tourist trucks from Leon are just arriving. There are no rangers and no one to tell you where you can't go.... More

Whoa! Spectacular view when on the top of the volcano ! I'm 32 and tried to go slow going down the volcano, unsure what I did wrong and I flew down that volcano ! My other friend ,52years old, went slow and enjoyed it , but I was really scared I would tumble and roll and break something ! I'm... More

Seriously, book the tour where you slide down on a board. Be in shape enough to hike up the side of the volcano, and walk everywhere you can.

It took us an hour to hike up the volcano. Gave us awesome views. We were down in 1 minute by a baord. It looks scary in the beginning buth it isn't. So worth doing! Bring water, sunscreen and a hat, you need it!! We booked it via terra tours and costed us $30 pp.

If you are in for some adventure, I highly recommend the volcano surfing on Cerro Negro. I went with a tour group called Sutiava Travel. The ride was exhilarating, but safe. I would do it again.
