I took the ferry across from Lamarque. Even from the boat I could tell the citadel would be an experience. Going at sunset was a fortunate accident. Well worth a visit for the views and a walk around the area.

We stopped at Blaye on our river boat trip. The fort is very well preserved and is well worth the visit! A lot of walking!

Located in the Citadelle. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. We went on the official tour of the Citadelle and Catacombs (6€). Takes about 1 hour and is excellent. In high season there is one tour a day in English. Starts from the tourist information office.

River cruise stopped in Blaye. Took a walk to the top. Great view. Good place for a picnic. It wasWednesday and there a big outdoor market in progress with lots of interesting items for sale.

Enjoyed a walking tour of Blaye's historic citadel as part of a Viking cruise. History buffs in particular will be well satisfied with a few hours here. This 17th c. military fortification is a prime example of military architect Vauban's style and creation. A further bonus, the citadel surrounds still-extant ruins of a 12th c. castle, contained within. And all... More

This Citadelle was constructed in the 17th century by Vauban. It overlooks the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and offers a spectacular view of the estuary.

We visited here with our 13 and 11 year old. A must visit whilst in Bayeux as the cemetery is very moving. Although a `British` war cemetery there were plenty of other nationals as well. Beautifully kept, historically important and pleased that we went.

Amazing place to visit. We took the English tour of the tunnels and it was good value at 6 euros each. Lots of history and hidden places. Takes water with you as it got very hot when we visited. Didn't realise you could also camp within the citadel.
