About
Haida Style Expeditions is a Haida Owned and Operated, family business practicing sustainable tourism on Haida Gwaii. Owners, James & Shawn Cowpar, identical twins, offer over 25 years of experience in the tourism industry. A team of local professional guides, your safety is our number one priority. We provide a variety of cultural tours into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, Marine Conservation Area, and Haida Heritage Site. Guests will have the opportunity to visit ancient village sites, meet the Haida Gwaii Watchmen, watch for wildlife, and experience nature on any one of our three different tours into Gwaii Haanas. On our West Coast Tour, we explore the Ancient Village site of Ts'aahl (Chaatl) where one can view two of the last frontal poles still standing since contact and learn about the history of the village. Interesting in fishing on the West Coast of Haida Gwaii, enjoy catching salmon and halibut while listening to local stories. Haawa (thank you)

This tour with Haida Style was the ‘grand finale’ to a magical week on this amazing island. Glynn, the captain, demonstrated his considerable skill as a seaman on that gusty but sunny Saturday we set out. Glynn was also very eager to share with us his considerable knowledge of the nearby waters. And we should also mention Glynn is quite the chef. Roan, our guide, in the several different stops of the tour, sketched for us an impressive picture of Haida culture, their way of life and their strong connection to nature, especially the trees. The poles were a big part of the outing and, thanks to Roan, we came to learn much about their importance to the Haida people and the significance of the various images carved into them. We could all sense the passion Roan felt for the people and places, the stories, he was telling us about. Both Glynn and Roan gave us an experience far beyond our expectations and was truly humbling. Haawa Haida Style!

Hats off to James, Trent and Xiila. We spent a full day with them visiting two Haida sites. James and Trent's expertise as boaters was exceptional, as they expertly navigated the rough waters we encountered. Xiila gave superb, detailed information on the village sites that were home to her ancestors! James and Trent prepared a scrumptious seafood meal for us all.

I highly recommend this tour group to visitors to Haida Gwaii.

Every part was wonderful, of course perfect weather helps. SGang Gwaay was so special and our guide was able to bring it to life for us. I loved the boat ride through beautiful scenery. We were lucky enough to see puffins, whales and many other animals. Great food too!

Gwaii Haanas is an incredible experience that everyone should have an opportunity to visit. However, I didn’t find my experience with this tour operator to be very good. They were very difficult to get a hold of both by phone + email, finally when I was able to provide my C/C number for a deposit, no confirmation was sent to me. I called them multiple times 2 days before my tour and couldn’t get a hold of anyone, sent many emails, no response. The tour itself on the boat was fine, but the demeanour and attitude of the captain not so much. Food was ok, nothing special, I would recommend bringing your own snacks if you have any dietary allergies as they didn’t read or acknowledge mine even though I had provided the info in advance. Giving it 3 stars because the locations we visited were still amazing, however the pictures on their website are misleading - you won’t get that close to any wild animals.

booked a tour to ninstints with haida style expeditions, got my confirmation, booked flights to get to haida gwaii, haida style would not honour my booking and sold my seat to someone else, james cowpar the owner refused to respond to me with an alternative booking, had to cancel my flights to haida gwaii, cost me a re booking fee with air canada. this company has no respect for customers and its commitments, very disappointed. i would reccomend taking a tour with there competition moresby explorers.

My friend and I booked an excursion to Hik'yah GawGa and when we arrived on the day of the excursion, we were told that the waves were high and that there was a chance that we would have to turn back. We set out on the boats and before long we hit the big waves. Before too long the leader of the excursion made the call that it was not safe to continue. We turned back and were served tea, coffee, and muffins and then went back to the marina.

We were very disappointed that we didn't ever make it to Hik'yah GawGa but I respect that the company put safety ahead of everything else. We were offered the chance to participate on a different day but we were leaving the next day and couldn't. We received a refund quickly and without any hassles.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable and if we ever make it back to Haida Gwaii we will definitely book another excursion with Haida Style Expeditions

I agree with another reviewer that the sites at Haida Gwaii are amazing, but the communication and service by Haida Style were not good. They charged us more than they quoted. They cancelled one tour the night before, and didn't reach us, so we showed up at the dock at at 7:30am as directed. No apologies. The boat ride itself is pretty rough and bouncy, and the toilet onboard was disgusting, so a 5-hour ride each way is long and pretty uncomfortable. On the plus side, Captain Robert and Watchman James were both good communicators and very knowledgeable.

Used this company on Aug 19 for a tour of Skidigate inlet. The tour guide was came across as an angry and bitter person who only repeated her own story over a two hour period. No helpful info was provided.

We had the pleasure of participating in the Windy Bay/Hot Springs tour with Haida Styles. The trip was awesome. Having a chance to see some of the Haida culture and having it explained by Haida guides was truly a wonderful experience. The equipment was top notch and guides were very experienced. Book early as this company is in great demand. They do an excellent job and we will be booking with them again.

We booked a few weeks ago for a boat trip to SGang Gwaay (aka Ninstints) in late July. Last week I got a call from them saying that they do not allow seniors on their trips and our booking was cancelled. Really annoying! My husband and I are in our 70s but we are active seniors, lots of walking and he is a mountain climber. We are quite capable of getting in and out of a boat and walking on rocky beaches. I asked to speak to the owner James but he was "unavailable" and has not called me so far. Beware of this company if you are over 60!
