We drove out to this park but there was no one at the welcome center and when we started into the park it stated that you had to pay and get a parking permit. Not being use to having to pay to get into a...More

All the camp sites here are backpacking sites so bring the lightest gear you have based on your individual strength. A small cooler is fine but won't recommend the big Coleman gas grills with their heavy propane tanks. There's a decent uphill path which makes...More

This is one of my favorite state parks because it's located about 30 minutes from the Twin Cities and it has a wide variety of hiking trails from biking trails near the visitor's center to relatively flat walking trails along the St. Croix river to...More

Being so close to the city I expected a busy and crowded park. What I found was the complete opposite. Afton has many backpacking sites and a few go up sites. Also they have a yurt and camper cabins. The cabins have electric but no...More

One of my favorite easy hiking spots. If you are not into hiking, it is a great place to just sit by the river and watch a few the boats go by away from others. You can rent a cabin and cook out or just...More

The yurt is so amazing. My kids loved it!! Swimming fishing and camp fires not far from home. The yurt has no electricity but has a wood burning stove for warmth if needed. There are 6 beds. Very cute place

Afton State Park is a unique place. My dog and I usually spend at least 5 hours there a week hiking the trails and the dog lives to splash around in Trout Brook. We always come in the "back" or unofficial entrance which is about...More

We like to head to Afton for the camping. Sites are pretty spread out and you don't usually hear your neighbors (if you do they are the Boy Scouts and they tend to quiet quickly). Most sites are only a mile from parking, but it's...More

Winter camping at its finest! Very comfortable, but don't expect the tiny woodstove to actually provide any heat. Plan to wear your warm outdoor clothing inside.

MN State Parks require annual or daily pass for vehicles. However, Voyageurs National Park up north in Minnesota does not.

No. Hike in camping only. I think there is a KOA in Woodbury if you want to stay there and hike in Afton State park. You can buy a MN State park sticker to hike Afton State park, get a day pass OR park on the south... More
