Most years my wife and make a visit to the Minnesota Opera at the Ordway Theater in St Paul. It is always a great evening. The season is short - five operas presented. Usually one or two very familiar operas, a couple of standards and at least one modern production. I'm more inclined to the modern opera. but they are... More

The 68 HS string players were entranced by the innovative seating of the very large orchestra on stage. The staging was minimal but worked perfectly. The singers and players were engaging and kept my students interested. Wagner's Das Rheingold was entrancing.

MN Opera is exceptional for a smaller metropolitan area. Operas are presented at the Ordway in St. Paul, not in Minneapolis. Productions are expertly staged and the singing is outstanding. I prefer the more traditional operas, but newer operas are presented each season. I am a season ticket holder and encourage anyone residing in MN or visiting to check out... More

Opera in the Twin Cities could always be a mixed bag. When we moved to Minneapolis in 1969, Minneapolis hosted the longest stay of the Metropolitan Opera yearly tour. And there was the St. Paul Opera, good but tattered. The Met stopped touring, the St. Paul Opera disappeared and we attended opera any other place but here. With the advent... More

My husband and I enjoy opera, so we attend the Minnesota Opera when we can. This past year, we bought season tickets for their opening night performances. I can say that all the singers and orchestra musicians do a fabulous job! They are very talented and are truly professional musicians. The sets are usually quite well done, too. We have... More

The opera Carmen itself was wonderful. The venue, Ordway theater in St Paul, provided totally inadequate bathroom facilities for the women. I used the ladies' room during intermission and the line of women had to be at least a hundred women long possibly as many as a hundred and fifty ...you couldn't even find the end of the lines. They... More

Some performances can be wonderful, but others completely miss. Hard to predict. Worth a shot, but don't go in with high expectations in case you stumble on a bad performance.

I've only been to a couple of their productions, and have been impressed by how seriously they take their work. The artists are committed and persuasive; the staging can be startling, but effective. You may leave shaking your head, but they will give you some stuff to think about for months, if not years, to come.

The Magic Flute was innovative without losing the essence of the original opera. I was a bit disappointed in the singing of the Queen of the Night. My only disappointment was I failed to listen to the music adequately. There was so much visual activity and wonderful singing, my senses failed to pay attention to the music.

I loved all of the productions this year. I especially enjoyed the re-imagining of Magic Flute. I liked Papageno as Buster Keaton, and his interactions with the cat. I wished the Queen of the Night would have been solid on her high notes.
