You may see some wild life including birds and water fowl, when we visited they had a group of goats grazing in an area, don't recall seeing any deer and no elephants

Come And See If You Can Find The Ball & Prickly Pear Cactus!
Sep. 2017 • Family
My wife and I traveled here this September and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty and the wildlife of the refuge. This NWR is located in far western Minnesota near the small town of Odessa. It was established to provide habitat for migratory birds, fish and wildlife conservation. We thoroughly enjoyed driving the many miles of roads available on the auto tour. We were able to spot many kinds of animals and birds. We enjoyed fishing from the banks of the Minnesota River which runs through the refuge and were able to collect enough northern pike for dinner. We very much enjoyed walking around in the visitor/interpretation center to warm up on the cool day day that we visited. This refuge includes many opportunities for visitors to utilize like the fishing, hunting, walking the trails and great photo opportunities. Come and bring your family (especially children), binoculars, camera, fishing poles and enjoy what this area of Minnesota has to offer. This is a wonderful place to get outside and walk to see the beauty of the outdoors. Remember the great fishing too.

We drove a long way for nothing much...

If you come here in the winter make sure you dress for the weather and have some cross country skis or at least some snow shoes because this area isn't built for much else. We drove out here to take our pictures next to the Check point MN sign post located for some reason here at the wildlife refuge. It took us 160 miles to drive here from Minneapolis and aside from taking some pictures the horrible cold winds had us scurrying back to the car in record time. We may have enjoyed a better view more but there wasn't a lot going on here so we were really scratching our heads and asking ourselves why did we drive so far for this? You may want to do the same before making this amazing voyage to such a stark and bitterly cold landscape.

The most western looking part of Minnesota
May 2013
Great birding refuge for grassland birds, waterfowl, water birds, and under certain water conditions many species of shorebirds in July, August, and September. Not many mammals to see other than deer and raccoons but the rocky landscape, views of the Prairie Coteau to the west in South Dakota, and unusual vegetation like prickly pear cactus offer a western landscape rare in this Midwestern state. There is a wildlife drive but get a refuge map and be willing to walk down gated roads to find some of the better habitats, especially for grassland birds and flora.

Enjoy fall drives?

Take a drive through to view colorful leaves, huge boulders in the middle of nowhere and you may also quite possibly see wildlife.
