Did a couple of state parks in the eastern side of Minnesota. This one is not worth coming to for hiking. We came in middle of April and not much to see. The prairie trail hike and the bluebird trail hike it is exactly that a prairie hike. Am assuming there are a lot of bluebirds in the summer because there were a lot of bluebird houses. We came, we saw, we left.

Come for the park not for swimming
Jul. 2020 • Family
Beautiful site, lots of birds & nice bathrooms (both pit toilets & modern facilities). The lake is beautiful, but not for swimming. Difficult to access, weedy & bracken.

Bluebirds
Jun. 2019 • Solo
From out of town, went on the bluebird walk and saw them sticking their heads out of their houses and flying around everywhere. Beautiful birds. Ranger station was closed but they were mowing and came and asked if they could help me find something. I felt safe walking alone as there were RVS in the campground nearby.

campground right on the lake

Coming north out of Ortonville, a friend and I saw the park on the left for what seemed like miles before actually reaching the park entrance. I was beginning to wonder whether I would ever get there. The south unit of the park has some nice camping on Big Stone Lake. There are no trails in the long stretch south of the park entrance.
The Bonanza segment is several miles northwest. We didn't have the time to check out the hiking trail here.

Terrible. is there any hope for this body of water
Jul. 2017 • Couples
rolled in in the late afternoon july 2017. Tent camped 20 feet from shore in the state park. First thing we noticed was the putrid disgusting smell coming off the water. The water had the look and consistence of tomato soup only brownish green. Walked over to the swimming beach it was horrible. really can't find words to describe the experience of wading in this water. I have never seen water vegetation like this. did some boating the next day and left. prob was once a nice body of water. Now horribly spoiled by agriculture and livestock run off and poor septic and waste water regulations of the many shore inhabitants of the so called lake. We left feeling sad and depressed.

Good facilities for the area

Picturesque and clean. Nice family areas with room to spread out. Appears to be well maintained. Great for locals and visitors, too.

Nice hiking trails

This state park is split into two locations. Camping (primarily) at one park, and lake shore hiking at the other half of the park eleven miles away!

Always so fun here. Fishing usually great! Shopping in town is fun and beverage at several local bars is a great time! State park is close and so is refuge. Just love Ortonville :)

Beautiful Park and Lake
Aug. 2014 • Couples
This lake is the birthplace of the Minnesota river and borders South Dakota. It is a very quiet lake with not a lot of boat traffc when I was here. The geology of the area is really cool with large sections of exposed bedrock and large glacial boulders littered around. Very epic and astounding in beauty.

Can never find public access
Jun. 2014 • Friends
Maybe it's just me but every time I come here I drive around for an hour trying to find public access. Once I manage though I always enjoy myself. For such a large lake there's not many bars, restaurants, rental places etc on the water which is a slight negative but it's quiet and relaxing. HUGE lake that you could spend days upon days on.
