Built in 1927, the Chateau was one of the most elaborate theatres built in Rochester in the early 1900s. The exterior sunburst design marquee is lit with 636 light bulbs. Its unique French Village decor includes interior balconies and turrets and, on the ceiling, stars in the night sky. Refurbished in 1994, this elegant old theatre now houses a Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks Cafe.

Half of the reviews for this activity relate to the old theater building, and half are for the new 14-screen cinema on the outskirts of town. Part of what attracted us was the prospect of watching a movie from a recliner in a 1927 theater....More

My children call this the "comfy seats" theater. Generally, our family only goes to the first showing of a movie here, as a special treat, since they are more expensive. The recliners ARE very comfortable. But since the recliners take up more space, it has...More

We were long-term lovers of the "old" Chateau Theater, which really did look like a chateau. Very quaint. And we loved its central "down town" location. But even after deserting the main scene, we still find the new Chateau our favorite of the now three...More

In my opinion, this is the best theater in town. They have now added reclining seats. At every screen I believe, too. When you go, it looks like an old time theater from outside, inside though, you have the modern things you expect at a...More

The Chateau has inspired numerous quests to save it. It is really special to the people of Rochester and when you visit, you'll see why. There's something magical about it.

as of may 2016 it appeared closed and there was no info displayed on the outside. Sign is illuminated at night and makes for a nice backdrop for pictures. The little plazza in front has a fountain with benches where you see Mayo staff and...More

I really like this former theater, turned bookstore, turned who knows what is next. I never knew this building as a theater, but when it was a B & N Bookstore I enjoyed perusing books while I admired the very unique and decorative interior of...More

This is my favorite theatre in Rochester. I don't need all the frills of a bar and restaurant in the theatre. Keep the prices down and let me see a movie.
