Hiking in the area
Apr. 2021
Made reservations to stay in one of the camper cabins. MAKE SURE you go to the UPPER CAMPGROUND that is where the cabins are. This park also has a lower campground which is not close by. Thank goodness we just happen to go to UPPER. The reservation line and paper work said NOTHING about go to UPPER. The cabins are far apart from each other and have a nice picnic table, fire ring and nice grass surrounding the cabin. This time of year nothing is open and nobody is around. There is a couple of vault toilets. The UPPER campground is wide open not much privacy and no trees. We did all the hikes. The upper hike was really a straight shot. I guess Fort Renville was somewhere on this trail but there were no signs of anything and no plaques or information about the fort. When you get to the end of trail you cross the street and go up a hill to see "state record" cottonwood tree. Its .7 mile plus a little to see the tree one way. We did the LOWER campground hike the next day. This area has way more trees and part of the hike is next to Lac qui parle lake. We really enjoyed the hike and saw a lot of geese and mallards. Not sure about summer time and bugs!!!!!! There were a couple of OLD vault toilets and no toilet paper. But we are prepared. lol We enjoyed both hikes.

Upper campground is clean, and has
a very nice bathroom bldg with several private showers. There are 2 handicapped shower/bathroom combo and 4 single showers with their own outside door.

Beautiful Hike

Walked hiking trail found password.
Hiking Club map needs update as a small part of trail near the Lac Qui Parle river has been rerouted. Some work on trail has started but know it will lead to a better experience.

Pay attention to upper and lower campground choices - depending on time of year

Lac qui Parle State Park has two separate campgrounds (Upper and Lower) and there is a chunk of driving distance between them. both are also separate from the state park check in/registration. The park is full of beautiful wildflowers and located on/near a scenic lake. The upper campground is newer, and cleaner/newer facilities/showers - and some sites have a view of the distant lake. However, there is NO shade - barely any trees and so not much privacy between camping sites. Beautiful wildflowers all around thought, and the camper cabins are up here. The lower campground is more woodsy, with shade and trees and grass - which means it can be cooler but also BUGGIER - in the summer - we go hit with a horrid batch of mosquitoes. The lake has a boat access with a dock and a small "swimming area" - however BEWARE of the algae (scum) floating on top of the lake water -it is especially bad this month of July due to high temps and rainfall. We choose not to swim in it at all. The lake was great to paddle kayaks though. State park does have canoes and kayaks for rent.

What a Winter Adventure!
Feb. 2018 • Couples
My husband and I recently moved to Southwestern Minnesota and have spent one day each week exploring. This park was one of our first trips. This was in February so there was still snow on the ground. The lake was frozen, everything white and beautiful. We drove off the main road to see a picnic area and promptly got stuck in a snowbank! After several unsuccessful attempts to extricate ourselves, we called for help. The park ranger was so kind and helpful. Thank goodness for large trucks and tow straps! We had quite a few laughs. We also saw wild turkeys, eagles, and geese. We look forward to returning in the spring, summer and fall

The Park Was Under Water
Oct. 2017 • Couples
We came out specifically to do the State Hiking Club Trail. Our goal is to do them all. We got to the entrance and the sign said the trails were closed due to high water. Also the winds were gusting to 50 mph. Given that our primary purpose was to do the hike, we decided to come back another time and do the hike and the rest of the park.

Lake View is incredible!!!!
Oct. 2017 • Family
The park had the water shut off so we couldn't use it, however with that said, the park is very gorgeous. We went in the fall so the native grasses were all brown, but so pretty for the prairie. We would love to come in the summer and do some fishing. My hubby tried to go. The view of the lake is incredible and can't wait until we can get out on that!.
