Served in the US Army for 25 years. 14 years 9 months and 23 days of it in the National Guard. Camp Shelby is in Hattiesburg and was our main training area for many, many years and yet I had never heard of this museum during that time. I took a group of boys on a tour and was really... More

Wifee and I were on our way up to Jackson, MS after spending a week in Louisiana. Hattiesburg was our half way rest stop on the way. The muesum is in a very quite/out of the way part of the town. Hardly anyone else was in there aside from a group of students finishing up a narrated tour. We found... More

Sure the neighborhood is a bit rough and rundown, but don't let it deter you. The museum is packed with information about the military history of African American soldiers. Not only is it housed in the original building, but it contains a cell phone tour and interactive exhibits...for free. And of cell phone navigation isn't an option. There is video... More

We came across the African American Military History Museum when searching for things to do in Hattiesburg. When we arrived, there was a big Army tank out front that my 4 year old son was excited to get a photo in front of. I was a little skeptical at first because there weren't any cars in the parking lot. But... More

Not a safe place to visit, people hanging around that look like they would take whatever you have, all times of the day.

This small but powerful museum is located in the neighborhood where some of our nation's unsung military men and women once lived, went to school, and played! Many historical buildings and homes weren't preserved, which is typical here in our country. However, through donations of oral/visual "artifacts " of the local descendants of these brave people, a museum was created,... More

This small but concentrated museum shows the little known truths about the unsung heroes and veterans and their roles in our wars and military actions. The lobby presents a life size replica of a typical USO provided to our service men and women overseas.

The museum was well laid out and paid a wonderful tribute to African American contributions to the armed forces. They were just recovering from a tornado that hit the museum last year. The cost was free.
