A decent zoo for the size of Jackson

We have been to better zoos, but this one is nice with a good selection of animals for the size of the Jackson area.

Took our nephew here about a year ago. He had a great time, so did we. Just be careful getting here, as the zoo isn't in the best part of Jackson. Animals are very friendly, and the staff there really does care about the animals' wellness. We try to make it at least once a year over there.

Dear USM2003 - We are so glad that you guys can visit when you can! Our animals definitely have personalities, and usually react well to our guests. We are working with the Jackson Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff's Department, and a group of area homeowners that form ZAPP (Zoo Area Progressive Program), that are working on revitalization of the neighborhood.... Hey, gfrazier, thanks so much for taking the time to comment. It is true that the Jackson Zoo is a little smaller than our sister parks, but after almost a century, we are proud to have surpassed many obstacles and limitations as we move into our next 100 years. We have a small but dedicated staff and Board that works... More

It has really gone down in the years i have visited. It really needs updating. I enjoyed the time with the family. Not a lot of animals. The train is nice. Beware of the smoke when u go through the tunnel. The neighborhood isn't the best. I wouldn't recommend just my opinion

Hello, Tshaun, our staff really appreciates your visit, and taking the time to comment. As we come up on our 100 year mark, 2019, our Ten Year Plan (unveiled last year), has some wonderful upgrades and additions in store. A property with a history as rich as the Jackson Zoo is always facing one or two issues, and not only... More

I loved this place as a kid but to me it has gone down hill a lot. There are still fun things for kids to do like of course see the animals and there is a train they can ride. I wish they could relocate it to a location closer to other attractions and I think that would boost admissions... More

Hey, Jess, thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to comment! Visiting the zoo with a 7 year old and a 3 year old... Cons: They are doing maintenance in several areas. The zoo is small. The Elephant House Cafe smelled like carnival food and is expensive of course. The bathroom we used smelled and my 3 yr old said it was dirty and nasty. We rented a double stroller for... More

Mel, thanks for coming to see us, and thanks even more for noticing ALL aspects of our 100 year old zoo on a city budget! (Not to mention the ever constant challenges of Mississippi weather!) We unveiled our Ten Year Plan last year, and are currently in the behind-the-scenes stages of making it a reality. I will pass along your... More

This isn't the biggest zoo in the country. I will say that upfront. However, it is a good zoo for the area. There are plenty of animals and variety. They could use more, sure but many of the favorites are there. There is even a train and a splash pad and a carousel for the kids. Like I said, don't... More

It could use some upgrades. It doesn't really have a lot of animals or attractions, but the kids loved the animals nonetheless. It is definitely smaller than zoos elsewhere.

The employees really care about the zoo and and do their best with what they have. Please go to support the zoo! The animals need the love and support! Great for adults alone. Not just for kids!

There are differently better zoo's out there, but it is the best one you will find in Mississippi. It is small and limited but if you are looking for something to do in Jackson it is worth the visit. Honestly, the zoo has seen better days. They had to get rid of the elephants, and parts of it need fixing up. That being said, it is a decent zoo, and your children won't know the difference.
