God missed out by not putting a lake there in the first place. It's perfect. Clearly a source of income for the locals but all their work appears to add to the beauty and photogenic nature of the scene! It pulls in fauna from (hundreds of) miles around Few non-Greek tourists so expect genuine Greek hospitality (and little English spoken!)

We stayed at Oikoperigiitis Hotel on the outskirts of Kerkini Village a 10 minute walk to the lake. The Hotel staff and owner were very helpful and we were told about boat trips on the lake which they organized and we had the opportunity to hire bicycles from the hotel as well. The walk down the country lane towards Kerkini... More

Kerkini lake is about 100km (1,5 hours by car) away from Thessaloniki. A paradise for bird lovers!!! I visited the area in late January. The weather was cold with temperatures between -3C to 3C during the day. The lake was covered by a thin layer of ice!!! Dalmatian pelicans made great subjects!!! A must visit place if in the area.... Very nice boat trip and great bird watching. The forest in the lake is very beautiful and full of birds. After sailing you could visit one of the pubs nearby and try delicious fried fish :) I highly recommend the tavern at Oikoperiigitis hotel :) Many thanks - everything was perfect :)

Just near Serres, in the valley is the Kerkini Lake. You can see every where birds, and the lake is also known for the fishes (ask in the tavernas around).

A fantastic part of Greece mainland - food, wine, landscapes and birdlife is high class. This is the original Greece and the people living in that area are friendly and wellcoming. Boattrip on the lake and close encounter with fantastic flamingoes, pelicans, spoonbills and others. Mountains and small charming villages

there's hard to find an activities close to border Greece-Bulgaria.We spend a few hours in Kerkini Lake - you can see a lot of different birds, to take a little boat and even to expiring horse riding. In the village a few nice restorants and even a traditional Friday Market

We went there to visit filming location of our favorite film which is named Weaping Meadow and directed by Theodoros Angelopoulos. But we didn't see the village which had been builded for film. It was such a disapointed that words are still not enough to describe. When we went there we learned that they shut down the rezervuar's dam shutter... More
