Tired of rising early to catch a cheapo, no frills airline?
Instead find a comfortable channel Crossing, see Norfolk Lines, Dover-Dunkerque and drive to the South of France.
No, not to the sun, sand and expensive waterside cafes of St. Trop, but instead turn North at Aix en Provence yes north on the old Route Napoleon direction Gap - Sisteron. Turn off at exit 18 and head for Greoux les Bains, Riez – (Market Wednesday and Saturday) and head for Moustiers Sainte Marie.
I have visited it 3 times already this year, in sunny July when the lavender fields were ripening and wafting on the breeze a heady mix of vapours, lavender, thyme, oregano and bergamot.
In September after a summer with family in Majorca of sun, sangria , and water sports, the village was full of tourists. The lavender was harvested and everywhere had that blowsy overgrown feeling that comes at the end of a long hot summer.
Now again at the end of November with snow on the peaks at 1300 meters and rain lashing down. Everything not battened down was getting a drubbing from 100 km/hr winds which had raced up from Corsica. Even so the light has a luminosity like a Turner painting.
Despite all this I still found delight in this tiny hillside village, population 600, which has for centuries produced beautiful china using the local clays and fresh mountain water.
Known as the Grand Canyon region of France the delights of hang Gliding, walking, climbing, canoeing, serious rafting, bird and animal spotting are all available in this beautiful region. – in front of the house I stayed there were daily signs of wild boar.
And having vultures, one 10 meters over your head and the other 10 meters below in the gorge is unbelievable
The area is well endowed with Gites and Campsites, attracted by the Lac de Sainte Croix and the gorges Verdon which provides much of the water for Marseilles.
So if you are one of those whose soul needs uplifting by the sheer beauty of a region, check out Moustiers Sainte Marie, Alpes Haute Provence

Hello Rentsh,
Thank you very much for your feedback on our destination.
Indeed, we have so many assets: a village on a human scale, an earthenware craft industry that continues to exist, sumptuous landscapes, a canyon reputed to be the largest in Europe, preserved flora and fauna, fields of lavender as far as the eye can see and a lake that is a delight for those who wish to enjoy a moment of idleness!
Whatever the time of year, we always have something to offer curious visitors.
You have said it all and we say thank you again!

Have had this village on my must see list for some years now so at last have actually done it!... If you enjoy the plus beaux villages de France then Moustiers has to be seen but try and pick your moment if you have the flexibility of course...in September 2020 most probably due to the french taking their holidays in France due the virus, the place is still well packed with all sorts of visitors, camping cars, hikers, walkers, bikers, river sports enthusiasts, the lot!!
We walked in and around over 2 days and think we saw the best of the pretty backstreets, the views and the ambiance... My top tips would be to leave the car at the bottom of the approaches to the village and take a leisurely walk up to the village centre.. Its not that daunting even for those of us at a certain age!.... Secondly, avoid eating at the myriad eateries at the top... So much more choice of food at the restaurants at the foot of the village and far more reasonably priced.. You can eat a very good 3 course dinner at the foot of the hill for the same price as 1 plat at the top.. Enough said and very few of the pricy places up there really have that much of a view in my opinion...

A beautiful village set in the North of the lac du Verdon. The whole area is stunning especially during the flowering season for the lavender. The village itself is pretty but is a bit of a tourist trap, but you can see why in the past it has been voted one of the most beautiful villages in France, Beware parking in the height of the season can be a real nightmare. However in the off season is fairly easy to park. The village has nice little shops albeit pricey. There are some decent restaurants to eat in. Worth a visit in some of the most beautiful scenery especially around the lake that is close by.

Access to this town is walking only after you park. Good luck with the parking. You’ll find the streets narrow and treacherous to get to the parking lot - which will be very full. It was 100 degrees , swarming with tourists (July) , and I decided my life would still be complete without this experience so I left and was VERY relieved. I imagine at off season it would be more pleasant.

Hello Deborah C,
We are sorry to read your comment. Indeed, our village is medieval and its heart is only pedestrian. This allows us to keep our beauty as we were listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France.
Because we are a small village of 700 inhabitants built against the cliff, we only have a few parking lots. The bigger ones are at the foot of the village and you can reach the center walking or with a small train shuttle.
Our situation, next to the canyon and the lake made Moustiers a must see in the region and we do have a lot of people during July and August.
We hope to welcome you again at a less visited time of year so you can enjoy the quietness of our village.
We also hope your stay in the region was pleasant.
Sincerely,
The tourist office staff

It has become our habit to always visit the office of tourism first. And to get the name of the representative when they have been extremely helpful Thus the title of our review is Alexandra who was delightful and informative!

Dont miss this place! it is very nice and enjoyable just to walk from the streets of this city. There are many cafes, shops and restaurants if you need to take a brake.
You can also climb to the top.

Small but helpful tourist office in Moustiers Sainte - Marie France where many languages are spoken. Maps, local activities and free information.

We hit a curb while parking and got a flat tire. The kind lady here called the local garage who sent someone immediately to change tire and repair within 30 min. Merci ‼️

We are staying in Riez for a week with five teenage boys and want to do hydro speed and water hiking but the nearest looks like in Casstelaine which is an hour drive away and the electric bikes which is even further. Are there any other nearer companies?

We were there for just one night and didn't do any outdoor activities that you mention. The tourism office - and hotels have good pamphlets and likely suggestions. It is a beautiful area...the water in the river looks amazing! Enjoy...
