Monsaraz is a 'must visit' place if you are exploring Portugal. Located on a hill, not far from the Spanish border, it is like a village frozen in time. Cars are not allowed to enter, but there is sufficient parking outside the village and a short walk (uphill) to the main entry gate. The streets are all cobbled and there is an abundance of things to visit and see. There are a variety of restaurants, mostly Alentejo cuisine, some of them offering vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

A not to be missed village for its beauty (AND views!). Charming little shops (does not feel “touristy”), and picture opportunities all through the village (including several “Selfie” pods to stand on for beautiful background pics). The views from the top are breath-taking (can see all the way to Spain on a clear day), as are all the different beautiful little side streets where colorful flowers and beautiful views appear around each corner as you roam through the small streets. Plenty of parking at the top (free), but we went on a weekday, so I’m not sure about parking spots on the weekends. There are several charming restaurants as well.

It is a lovely place. You can go thru the town in just a few hours. If you are there around sunset, stay and see it. It was just beautiful. Saborores restaurant was absolutely amazing. It's only open for limited times. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area.

Sadly enough, it’s a sign of the times: landmarks that are preserved only to serve the wondering eye of tourists. Sure, the houses, castle, streets are authentic and are nice to see, but the overall atmosphere is very fake-touristique.
If only 20 minutes away, than do the visit, if not I would pass.
Oh, luckily it’s not that crowded. And the castle itself is very dangerous with young children.

We have stayed 4 nights at Monsaraz which is a wonderful and beautiful village. It is really genuine. From 11:00 am and 6:00 pm cars are forbidden within the walls which even better. One drawback : insufficient level of the restaurants at Monsaraz.

What a fabulous place this is!! Perched on top of a hill with stunning views all round and wonderful streets with interesting shops and restaurants. The castle is worth seeing, and only poses a problem on the higher walls for kids if you don’t hold their hands. Not touristy at all unless of course hosting visitors from elsewhere automatically makes a place touristy. I would love to see the places that people rate highly if they don’t give this a solid 5/5. Beautiful.

Beautiful place to visit with a great view over all Alentejo, and the Guadiana river. The village is very clean, with shops to buy souvenirs.

This is the fairy tale village and castle from the nursery rhymes. A must -see. It’s clean, there’s plenty of parking and the condition of the castle is remarkable.
There are a few shops, a few restaurants and more inns than I expected. The views are spectacular. It’s easy to see why this location was so valuable.

We took a day trip from Evora to visit this small village and were well rewarded. in our humble opinion, this has got to be the prettiest hilltop village in the Alentejo, if not all of Portugal.
First, the drive up to village is stunning. At the foot of the village is a viewpoint over which one sees a vast expanse of lakes formed by the River Guadiana to the east. To the west one sees farmlands, symmetrically laid olive groves and orchards.
Second, the village itself exudes a timeless atmosphere. The houses have the customary whitewashing; but the narrow streets are laid with slate which have been vertically laid (not like the usual cobble-stoned streets in other places). The village is also small; we walked around it leisurely in about 30 minutes.
There are a few very nice shops, and a few restaurants. The village is not overly commercial which adds to its charm.
We were told that only 38 people still reside in the village.
We highly recommend visiting this village.

Does this place have shops open on a Monday in March - or does the season not start until the summer?
Written March 14, 2019
We went there in late November, which is definitely low season. We were there during the week in the early afternoon, after lunchtime. Although it is a very beautiful village, it was like a ghost town, with everything shut down.
