Nice place with great views and an interesting statue. Accessible by horse or also by a nice walk from San Agustin

There’s not many statues here, but the landscapes here is beautiful. You can see nine waterfalls here during the rainy season. Great place to visit for landscapes after seeing so many statues in other part of the archeological sites

From the arqueological park it's possible to do a round walk to pass further sights including la chaquira. These sights seem to be usually done on horses (cheap 4hour horseback riding tours available), but it's also doable in a longer walk (alltogether San Agustin to the park, walk in the park and from there through these spots back to San Agustin are about 18km) but it's nice and relaxed (bring water, snacks and sunscreen). La Chaquira can be visited by walk of about 45-60mins one way directly from San Agustin village.
La Chaquira was not the most impressive 'stone' but with the descent to the platform and the surroundings it was nice as well. Would recommend to see this place as well due to the beautiful views. In general all of our group liked this area and the easy going hike around these different sights.

Yesterday we went to this beautiful place. We were so surprised that there was no entry fee and that the place was so quiet. We had sat at the viewport for maybe 15minutes before some other couples joined us and the place got slightly busier (I think we were lucky these people came when they did).. we then met another couple and sat talking to them at the viewpoint. They decided to start walking back whilst we stayed a the viewpoint for a little longer. 15minutes later we headed up. Only to find the couple we had met had just been robbed at gun point! They ended up on the floor from the scare and the two gunmen had hit them both over the heads with the bottoms of their guns (the mans head was bleeding badly from this).. the gentleman who had been hit had said he could see bullets in the attackers revolver.
This was such a shock and me and my partner felt shaken up and scared so I have no idea how bad the other couple must have felt. All I can think is that maybe we were all lucky that a big group were coming down as the attack happened which must have distracted the men to run away so that we could get the couple to help.
It’s such a shame, the place in unbelievably stunning and I would not say to miss it out but never go as a couple or alone! Make sure you find a group or a tour guide! These attacks happen often by the sounds of things and I can not believe there is not more information about it on the internet or in hostels warning travellers. Please don’t be silly and go alone be careful!

Today we (we are a couple) have been robbed by a man with a gun (not sure if real or not..) coming back from the Chaquira path... At 4pm...so... It's very sad because the place is very beautiful.. Ask always in your hostel to be accompanied... Or do it by horse/motorbike

We had a great afternoon visiting various ancient sites on horseback. La Chaquira is in a beautiful area where you can see numerous waterfalls.

La Chaquira is a standard 'first-stop' when you hire a horse and a guide for a day (which I highly recommend. The horse-riding experience is great. Horses seem to be well looked after and you get to see the area really well. There is a great spot for a view between San Agustin and San Jose. You must see it.
ps: don't do the jeep-tour for a day. It's a total rip off. You spend more time in the car (which is a van) than seeing places and they rip you off all along the way (they only stop in places where they force you either to pay entrance or buy their food).

Entering from the main road after visiting El Tablón. You walk about 25/30min along dirt farm roads. La Chaquira is located at the end of the road. There is a Resteraunt with light snacks and refreshments. A stone carving craftsman and a girl making beautiful thread bracelets.
There are statues all over the property hidden in bushes and long grass.
It’s also recommended you walk down an extensive staircase to see the River and canyon. There are 2 viewpoint platforms. It’s a nice option to see the statues and some beautiful countryside for free. (Only pay $1200 for the bus or $2000 for the mototaxi from centre San Agustin.
