Great to walk on, busy with lots of vendors. Good restaurants. Fishing on pier. Pay 1 sol per person to enter pier. Buy fishing paddles cheap (5-10 soles). We didn’t swim, just sat under umbrellas and put our feet in. A lot of life here, sea urchins, octopus, jelly fish...and that’s just what washed up or was pulled out near us!

Huanchaco once was wonderful. Que pena, now it's a mess. Noise, garbage and potholes. Many side streets are impassable, enormous potholes ruin every car rim. The noise from the discos and restaurants is so great that it is impossible to converse while eating. With all due respect, there are many discos disguised as hotels or hostals, which sell all sorts of things (!) Too bad, can only advise everyone not to visit this place.

I recently lived in Huanchaco as a volunteer for five months. It is an absolutely amazing place. The beach is quiet and serene (and cold!) except in December through March, when it is crowded on weekends and warm. Lots of great little experiences nearby, music, food, etc.
Locals are very friendly, and the reason I post this caution. They are great, but the surfer boys are ALL the same. Don't fall for it! I watched the owners of various surf shops, including ONECHAKO, UnLugar, and the Wave, using their business to take advantage of young female travelers. Go and have a great time, enjoy the scene and the surf, but don't give the local boys a second look- they aren't worth your time.

We ended up staying in Huanchaco by accident as we could not get a connection to Huaraz.
It's a chilled out surfy town and not a whole lot to see and do but if you like yoga then I recommend the morning class on the beach with Melissa.
It was the perfect way to relax and unwind after a few difficult overnight bus journeys.

Huanchaco is a small town, part of Trujillo. It is a place the locals go to at the weekend to swim surf and eat good food. The Huanchaco Beach restaurant provides fantastic seafood and I went there most days for lunch.

In the evenings Sabes Bar, up at the far end of town has a great atmosphere. It is run by a Peruvian and his English wife. If you want to chill, or play pool, it is the place to go. At certain times of year they also offer English style Apple Pie and Lemon Meringue with their excellent coffee. l will definitley be going back.

The local hostels are good. The Huankarute is very friendly and had broadband access.

The Spanish Catholic church of Huanchaco is perhaps one of the oldest colonial buildings in Peru. It is devoted to Our Lady of Sorrow and contains a 16th century sculpture in wood from the Sevilla school representing the Virgin of Sorrows. From the bell tower of the church you will have a extraordinary view over Huanchaco and the ocean. It cost 5 soles adults (around 2 dollars) and 1 sol childre (around 30 cents) The best time to go there is at sunset (but it is open between 3 to 7pm), when you can appreciate the beautiful sky colors. On the way, stop in the gardens on the slopes of the hill and learn more about local plants. Buried in the church is the former dean of the Cathedral of Trujillo who carried out many projects to benefit the local natives in the 17th century. According to local traditions, he is considered a saint and it is said to make miracles. In the past, many travelers stopped by this church to pray at his grave for a safe and sound trip.

The beach in Huanchaco is not for swimming but surfing with a rocky break and shoreline. We enjoyed sitting on the sand and catching some sun though the normal nuisances like litter are disappointing.
Plenty of nearby restaurants if you're hungry.
