Looking to take a trip to where something big happened? Try Mastodon State Historic Site. The site is the home of the Kimmswick Bone Bed, one of the most famous and extensive Pleistocene ice age deposits of fossils, including a number of bones of giant mastodons. Interpretative trails and picnic sites dot the landscape and a museum tells the natural and cultural story of the Clovis culture, which existed in the area between 10,000 and 14,000 years ago.

The last time I was here was about 35 years ago when I brought my daughter who was then 6. With the warm weather, and Presidents Day closing schools, I took my 2 grandchildren who are 10 and 6. It was a hit. The museum has the skeletal remains of a Mastodon, plus bones, teeth, hide etc., with explanations of... More

We've visited this state park a few times now and it has a lot of trailes and picknic areas. Their long trail is fun but hilly, with a lot of elevation change. It wore us out! The visitors center has a lot of nice artifacts and history of the site. One of the short trails includes some of the old... More

I only did the outside area . There a lot of areas to take pictures of different wild flowers. I enjoyed walking around the area.

The museum was small. I didn't hear about the movie from the person out the counter, I might have checked it out. I think $4 is a little high for what they have. The trail leading out from the museum has stairs and has quite an elevation change to get the bone bed. I had my small son with them... More

On a beautiful fall day we headed to this park because neither of us had been there. After paying the$4.00/per person fee we watched a short movie about the area and exhibits we would be seeing. It was very informative. The displays were nicely done. We took one of the trails which was well marked. There were plenty benches to... More

This is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Educational and fun at the same time! The displays are great and if you have some time to explore the hiking trails, you won't be disappointed!

I took my son and one of his friends to this attraction for the day. They found the museum to be somewhat interesting but they had a blast hiking and playing in the creek. We spent hours searching for crawdads and splashing about.

The park is nice with an easy trail to walk. There is a creek you can walk through within the trail. There is a harder, more hilly trail across the street. The playground is nice for the kids. There is plenty of shady areas to picnic in.

The museum has a $4 entrance fee but the short educational film is great and the ice age biofact displays are really neat. However, if you're looking for hiking I would go elsewhere. The park is right next to the highway and vehicles can be heard through the trees which ruined the outdoors aspect for us.
