Description:

The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations...

The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Mo. was built in 1998 and provides free tours or extended Steel Toe Tours.

Kansas City employees produce the Sportster®, Dyna®, StreetTM and V-Rod® families of motorcycles, along with select Softail® models, from fabrication and finishing through final assembly to include the liquid-cooled Revolution® and Revolution XTM powertrains for the V-Rod and Street families.

The tour center features a series of displays that guide you through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. You'll also have the chance to sit on current production motorcycles and visit the gift shop, which features tour-related souvenirs.

Your tour experience begins with an introductory video. Then it's on to the factory floor where you'll witness a wide range of operations from welding, laser-cutting and frame-bending, to polishing and assembly. You'll see fenders and fuel tanks being formed, newly painted frames hanging on the line, and sophisticated robotic welding technology. You'll also see the Revolution® powertrain assembled from crankcase to cylinder heads.

The free tour through the factory is really interesting. Lots of interesting information about assembly, company history, and employee engagement. As a heads up, Fridays are not full production days so we didn't get to see a lot of assembly actually happening. If you plan to do this tour, shoot for Monday - Thursday. It takes about an hour.

The tour gives you a detailed look at the time, skill, quality and love that goes into crafting a Harley Davidson. Whether you are into motorcycles or not, this is not to be missed.

Absolutely fantastic! Went on a friday, so the majority of the plant was shut down (Harley runs 2 - 10 hour shifts daily Mon - Thurs) but quite a few of the operations were being run while we were there, in addition to maintenance and production line changes. Very impressive; the factory is very clean and neat.

I did the free Factory Tour which lasted an hour. The tour was very interesting and your on the factory floor and watching them in production. You are given safey goggles and and earpiece so your able to hear the guide as it is noisy in the factory. There is an initial video they show you at the start of... More

A neat way to learn about HD and see how the factory is run. They put a lot of time and energy into making it a good working environment.

The tour covered a lot of the plant and enabled an opportunity to see the plant and how the various stations were organised. There was though a lot of HD is the best etc. but it was free. If you want to see things moving dont go on a Friday as they are not working. It depends which you prefer... More

It was cool to see how motorcycles are made. My husband loves them so he was right at home. They have step by step instruction boards so you can see start to finish. The tour is awesome.

Spent a day at the HD factory open house. The tour was a self guided tour but they do offer a guided tour when the factory is up and running. For motorcycle riders it's worth going to at least once.

Terrific factory tour; great information. Incredibly modern and remarkably clean. Very impressive to see how these fine machines are made. Movies beforehand are good. Found the store a bit wanting.
