Excellent museum. Helpful staff

Great info on the border ruffians, local history, and uniquely - a 1800s jail. So many interesting exhibits and very well documented and displayed.

I can't believe I've lived here for years and only just now discovered this place!!! Very very impressed with this HUGE collection of interesting items, wonderfully presented, super friendly and knowledgeable volunteers... Of course centered on history of this area, but applicable to rural history of anywhere in the USA!!!! Very nice, new venue. Way way larger than I expected.... More

I went here because of the Civil War history. What I found was a great local museum that included natural history, American Indian history, 19th - 21st century life in Vernon County history etc etc. One of the previous reviewers said plan a couple hours to see it all and I'd have to agree - especially if you take the... The Bushwhacker Museum in downtown Nevada MO consists of a great variety of antiques, Civil War and Osage people exhibits, an early 20th century doctor office, and an abundance of information on the history of Vernon County, MO. The self-guided tour takes approximately 2 hours and includes a tour of the Bushwhacker Jail, an historic stone jail located about a... More

We stumbled across this accidentally and were really glad we did. Great tour of a museum with lots of local information, antiques, etc. The short video at the beginning gave us a good understanding of the area and .subsequent tour was quite informative of a place I knew nothing about. There was a $5/charge per person, but it was worth... More

If you are interested in the civil war, ask Eldon Stewart to give you the tour. He's donated many items to this great museum and his personal information is wonderful. I'm so happy we had him give us the tour and share with us. They did a great job in collecting items and displaying historical information. We loved it all.... More

The Bushwacker Museum should be on everyone's list of "places to spend an afternoon". Such a wonderful stroll through history accompanied by fascinating articles, artifacts, and art. The volunteer staff and the curator are very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and welcoming, ready and willing to share their time and knowledge for a few minutes or for a whole afternoon. Be sure to... There's a lot more history in Nevada than I anticipated. This is a good place to learn about the Bushwackers, the Jayhawkers, and the Kansas/Missouri border wars. It includes a trip to the jail which was fascinating.

For a fairly small town, this is a well done museum with very nice exhibits. Don't miss the visit to the old jail. The staff are very friendly and helpful. It's a bargain.
