About
Since opening on February 6, 1943, the Campbell House Museum has served the greater St. Louis area as one of America's premier historic property museums. The Museum not only preserves the Campbell's house, but also their collection of original furniture, fixtures, paintings, objects and thousands of pages of family documents. Included in these documents is a unique album of 60 photographs of the interior of the house taken in about 1885. In 2005 the Museum completed a meticulous five-year restoration that returned the building to its opulent 1880s appearance, when the house was one of the centers of St. Louis society.

Loved the feeling of being in the actual house with the furnishings intact. It really took you back in time! You could see how the upper class lived and what it was like in so many ways. It went directly from a house to a museum, which is unique but also very special. You don’t have to be interested in furniture or even history - there really is something for everyone to enjoy. $10pp at end of tour. Lasted a little over an hour.

The Campbell House is utterly unique. If you are a fan of house museums, you may realize it iis important for the house to have a piece of two from the family that lived there. The rest of it is "period", picked because it could have been there.

Here 99% of the stuff in the stuff is actually from the family.

Plus, amazing docents.

This is a unique gem. The outside doesn't look very impressive from the street, but man it packs a visual punch! This was the first house built in this ritzy area in the mid-19th Century, pre-Civil War, and the only house standing today. It has most of the original furnishings and is very well restored/maintained. The docent was extremely knowledgeable about the family, St. Louis history, and the artifacts themselves. There is free parking on site and a small gift shop where you pay on your way out. I would recommend going if you are in the St. Louis downtown area. The tour lasts about an hour and it is only $10

My favorite part of the Campbell house museum was our docent, Dennis. He knew about the furnishings of the home, the life style of the family and those employed there, and the use of the objects that were from the time period. Dennis was eager to take any question. The children in our group had questions, as well as did the adults. Dennis showed respect to each person. His comprehensive knowledge was evident.

I rang the doorbell and was greeted by Sam, who gave me a detailed tour of the home of one of St. Louis’s early wealthy families, filled with their original furniture and art. All very well maintained and displayed. Sam provided context and insight on how they accumulated their wealth, the unsung people who made their pampered lives possible, and how the home became a museum.

The tour guide was fabulous as was the house. It is a typical Victorian interior in that it is very cluttered which gives a person lots to look at. There is also a bridal gown display that is nice to see. The guide was amazing and very informative.

This as the absolute highlight of my week in STL! Guide Dennis was knowledgeable, personable and engaging and I was agog at the amount of original artifacts in the house. The restoration of walls, woodwork & furnishings was also quite impressive. And to top it all off, they are accessible and have an adorable museum shop! What’s not to love?

A really beautiful, historic home. I would have liked the tour guide to have given more information - it seemed vague and not very informative. Also, there are no set tour times so when we arrived we rang the bell and were greeted and then made to join another tour that had already gotten underway. Perhaps this is why the tour felt less informative than we would have liked, because we missed a chunk of it? I think it would be better to perhaps do tours on the half-hour or something instead of haphazardly. The gift shop was very lovely.

Found this walking was glad that I stopped. The exterior is impressive and well kept. The interior was a WOW!. Hardly wanted to breathe for fear of disturbing the sense of calm and dignity. Feels like a trip back in time.

The Campbell House brings you back to the way things used to be. It is a gorgeous home and the docents/tour guides are incredibly well versed with facts and stories - ours had worked there for 20 years on a full time basis. I have been there twice and learned so much each time. Give it a try if you are visiting St. Louis and are near downtown or if you live right here in town. The Campbell House is a gem! Don't miss it.
